GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University women's basketball team defeated Rutgers-Newark, 76-67 in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) game on Saturday afternoon.
The Profs had four players that scored in double figures. Guard Kaitlin Schullstrom (so. Colts Neck, NJ/Colts Neck) led the way with 16 points, which was a career-high. Guards Bria Hill (jr. Atlantic City, NJ/Atlantic City) and Jade Bonder (jr. Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) each contributed with 15 points. Hill collected six rebounds while Bonder dished six assists. Center Kate Matthews (so. Clark, NJ/Arthur L. Johnson) produced 10 points and seven boards. Guard Anyssa Sanchez (fr. Stratford, NJ/Sterling) chipped in with nine points and six rebounds.
Rowan improves to 4-12 on the season and 3-6 in the conference. Rutgers-Newark has a 7-8 record with a 3-6 NJAC mark. Forward Jade Howard (jr. Sicklerville, NJ/St. Joseph's (Hammonton)) led the Scarlet Raiders with a game-high 18 points. She also grabbed nine rebounds. Forward Jasmine Daniels (sr. Lodi, NJ/Lodi) and guard Shala Glenn (fr. Piscataway, NJ/Piscataway) scored 10 points apiece. Guard Courtney Woodard (jr. Plainfield, NJ/Plainfield) added nine points and guard Jamie Cejour-Mobley (fr. East Orange, NJ/East Orange Campus) had six.
The Profs started the second half with a one-point lead (31-30). Bonder sank a three-pointer (14:37) and Matthews had a layup (13:49) for a six-point advantage (41-35). Forward Sharee Gordon (jr. Newark, NJ/University) hit a jumper at 7:52 and the Scarlet Raiders trailed by one (51-50). Rowan led by 11 points (63-52) at 4:24 after a 12-2 surge. Bonder scored four points while forward Megan Russ (sr. Cape May Court House, NJ/Middle Twp.) and Schullstrom each had three and guard Anyssa Sanchez (fr. Stratford, NJ/Sterling) had two. Bonder made two free throws (2:55) and Rowan was ahead 67-58. Woodard's layup (1:32) and guard Arianna Williams' (so. Lumberton, NJ/Rancocas Valley Reg.) jumper (1:19) pulled the Scarlet Raiders within four points (68-64). Hill registered four straight foul shots, two at 0:57 and 0:30 for an eight point lead (72-64). The Profs had two more free throws from Bonder (0:17) and Schullstrom (0:05) to seal the victory. Bonder led all scorers with 13 points in the second stanza.
In the first half, Matthews' jumper put the Profs up by one (13-12) at 10:45. The Scarlet Raiders scored six straight points to lead 18-13 with 7:50 remaining. Gordon, Howard and Woodard each had a basket. Howard made a layup to lead 26-19 at the 5:09 mark.
Rowan answered with a 12-2 run to go ahead 31-28 with 1:45 left. Schullstrom led the way with five points, Hill contributed with three while Bonder and Sanchez each had two. Forward Adayshia McKinnon's (fr. Montclair, NJ/Montclair) layup with 33 seconds on the clock, cut the deficit to one (31-30) at the break.
Rowan is home again on Wednesday, January 22 against Montclair State University at 6 p.m.
