WINTER HAVEN, FL – The Rowan University baseball team lost to Western New England University, 16-5 on Monday.  It was the Profs’ fourth game of the RussMatt Tournament on spring break.

Rowan has an 8-3 record while Western New England is 6-2 overall.  Right-hander Mike Lospinuso was the winning pitcher.  In eight innings, he gave up six hits and three runs, two were earned.  Righty Ryan Easterday (so. Westmont, NJ/Haddon Twp.) took the loss.  He (1-2) allowed three hits and two earned runs in 4.1 innings.  At the plate, Easterday was one for three with one RBI. 

Third baseman Mike Rubino led the Golden Bears with three hits (four at bats), a double, two RBIs and three runs scored.  Shortstop Kyle McKelvey contributed with three hits in five at bats, a double, two RBIs and one run scored.  Second baseman Tim Clark and first baseman Steve Ambrosino added one hit, two RBIs and two runs scored apiece.  Center fielder Jeff Schult chipped in with two hits (six at bats), two RBIs and three runs scored.

For the Profs, catcher/first baseman Sean Kelly (sr. North Bergen, NJ/North Bergen) went three for five with one RBI and one run scored.  Second baseman Mark Benak (jr. South Plainfield, NJ/South Plainfield) produced one hit, two RBIs and one run scored.  Third baseman Kevin McMenamin (so. Maple Shade, NJ/Maple Shade) had two hits in four at bats and one RBI.  Left fielder Rich Powelson (so. Shamong, NJ/Seneca) and right fielder Nick Kreiger (so. Manalapan, NJ/Manalapan) each registered one hit and scored one run.  Shortstop Ryan Williams (so. Southampton, NJ/Seneca) scored one run.

Rowan had a 1-0 lead after the first inning.  Benak scored on a sacrifice fly by Easterday.  Western New England went up 4-1 after three runs in the fourth inning and one in the fifth.  The Profs trailed 4-3 after scoring one run in the sixth and seventh innings.  McMenamin had a sacrifice fly in the sixth that brought home Kelly who led off with a single.  In the seventh, Benak knocked in Williams with a base hit.

The Golden Bears pulled away with eight runs in the top of the eighth and they tacked on four more in the ninth.  The Profs scored two runs in the ninth inning.  Kreiger started with a double and he crossed the plate on Benak’s ground out.  Powelson scored on a single by Kelly.   

Rowan plays again on Wednesday, March 20 against Gallaudet University (DC) at 6 p.m. in Winter Haven, FL.
