GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University women’s lacrosse team lost its season opener against Goucher College, 12-11 on Wednesday evening.
Midfielder Erin Reifsnyder scored the winning goal with 58 seconds remaining in the game. The Gophers are 1-1 on the season. Midfielder Hannah Khin led the way with five goals and one assist. Attack/midfielder Rita Meissner followed with four goals and midfielder Hannah Brown contributed with one goal and one assist. Attack/midfielder Megan Meluskey chipped in with one goal.
For the Profs, attack Becca Wood (so. Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill E.) scored four goals. Attack Marissa Micciche (jr. Kinnelon, NJ/Kinnelon) totaled three goals and one assist while midfielder Jamie Blondina (so. Toms River, NJ/Toms River S.) produced three goals. Attack Vicky Sucharski (jr. Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson) hit the net one time and had two assists.
Rowan totaled 35 shots and Goucher took 20. For the Gophers, goalie Ashley Shaner made 16 saves. The Profs’ goalie Lindsay Barrie (jr. Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) had six saves.
Goucher started the second half with three straight goals and trailed 8-7 at 34:02. Meluskey, Khin and Meissner each had a goal. The two teams exchanged goals twice. At 54:10, Meissner tied the score at 10 with an assist from Brown. Micciche put the Profs ahead 11-10 at 54:43 with a free position goal. Brown knotted the score at 11 (57:29) before Reifsnyder’s game-winner.
In the first period, Rowan scored six straight goals in 12:57. Blondina and Wood each tallied two goals while Micciche and Sucharski had one apiece. Goucher answered with four goals to pull within two (6-4). Khin made three of the four goals and Meissner had one. Micciche (19:00) and Blondina (25:33) put the Profs up 8-4 at the intermission.
Next, Rowan travels to Washington College (MD) on Saturday, March 2 for a 4 p.m. game.
