Women's Basketball Wins 86-83 Against Kean University

Guard Bria Hill wins game with three-pointer at the one-second mark.

GLASSBORO, NJ – Guard Bria Hill hit a three-pointer with one-second left to win the game for Rowan University, 86-83 over Kean University on Saturday afternoon.

Hill (jr. Atlantic City, NJ/Atlantic City) finished with 14 points.  Guard Valerie Garofalo (fr. Ventnor, NJ/Holy Spirit) scored a career-high 19 points.  Guard Kaitlin Schullstrom (so. Colts Neck, NJ/Colts Neck) contributed with 14 points and eight rebounds.  Guard Jade Bonder (jr. Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) followed with 13 points and center Kate Matthews (so. Clark, NJ/Arthur L. Johnson) chipped in with 10.

The Profs improve to 2-5 overall and 2-2 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference.  The Cougars have a 4-4 record with a 2-2 conference mark. 

Kean center Simone Smith (sr. Colonia, NJ/Colonia) scored a game-high 26 points.  She had a double-double with 10 boards.  Guard AnnaRose Pierre (jr. East Orange, NJ/Newark Tech) produced 17 points and seven rebounds. Forward Essence Casey (fr. Huntington Station, NY/Walt Whitman) and guard Stephanie Carlone (jr. Marlboro, NJ/Marlboro) each tallied 10 points while forward Jazmine Davis (so. Tinton Falls, NJ/Monmouth Reg.) registered 10 rebounds.

The score was tied at 76 with 4:59 left in the second half.  Hill had a three-pointer then she made two foul shots for a five-point lead (81-76) at 4:20.  Kean answered with a 7-2 run, which tied the score (83-83) with 2:40 remaining.  Hill was at the line with seven seconds on the clock. She missed the free throw and guard Anyssa Sanchez (fr. Stratford, NJ/Sterling) pulled down the rebound.  Hill recorded the winning basket with an assist from Schullstrom.

In the opening period, Bonder's jumper at 8:18 knotted the score at 23.  Davis made a foul shot (7:26) and Smith had a layup (7:22) for a three-point advantage (26-23).  Matthews sank the first of two free throws at 6:46, which tied the score at 26.  Her second put the Profs ahead by one (27-26).  Rowan led by one-point (31-30) with 4:24 remaining.  Garofalo, Matthews and Bonder each had a basket and Rowan was up 37-30 at 3:12.  Pierre scored a basket with 17 seconds on the clock and the Cougars trailed 41-38.  Garofalo ended the half with two fouls shots at the 10 second mark for a five-point advantage (43-38).  Smith led all scorers in the first stanza with 15 points while Garofalo totaled 12.  Davis hit the boards for 10 rebounds. 

Next, Rowan travels to conference opponent William Paterson University on Wednesday December 11 for an 8 p.m. game.
