Rowan Women's Basketball Edges Neumann, 71-68

GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University women's basketball team held on to defeat Neumann University, 71-68 in a non-conference game Thursday evening.

Center Kate Matthews (so. Clark, NJ/Arthur L. Johnson) and guard Bria Hill (jr. Atlantic City, NJ/Atlantic City) both registered a double-double to lead the Profs (3-7). Matthews recorded 13 points and 11 rebounds, while Hill produced 12 points and 11 boards. Guard Jade Bonder (jr. Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) was the game-high scorer with a career-best 17 points. Guard Anyssa Sanchez (fr. Stratford, NJ/Sterling) provided 10 points and guard Kaitlin Schullstrom (so. Colts Neck, NJ/Colts Neck) had five assists.

Guard Erica Marvel (sr. Oxford, PA/Oxford) led the Knights (3-5) with 14 points. Forward Colleen Hinde (sr. Blue Bell, PA/Wissahickon) tallied 11 points and eight rebounds. Forwards JoHanna Metzger (so. Shamong, NJ/Seneca) and Lauren Walker (sr. Gilbertsville, PA/Boyertown) each had 10 points. Guard Jessica Schlesman (jr. Barto, PA/Boyertown) and Metzger collected seven rebounds apiece. Schlesman added five assists.

In the second half, Rowan had its largest lead of 12 (38-26) at 17:57. The Knights went on a 9-0 run to trail 38-35 with 15:44 left. Hinde had four points, Metzger sank two free throws and Marvel hit a three-pointer. Forward Nicole Fallon (so. Wenonah, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) scored on a layup to cut the Neumann deficit to one (42-41) at 12:47. Marvel tied the game at 50 with a three-point shot (8:23). Bonder drilled a three-pointer at 3:24 for a 62-57 Rowan lead. Hill made two free throws with nine seconds remaining to end the scoring. Rowan did not allow Neumann to attempt a shot before the buzzer. Marvel led the second-half scoring with 14 points. Bonder had nine points for the Profs.

Rowan led 36-24 after the first half. The Profs jumped out to a 9-3 lead with 16:39 remaining. Matthews scored seven points on a jumper, a layup and three free throws. The Knights closed the gap to two (11-9) with Metzger's layup at the 13:21 mark. Hill's lay-in with 11:21 on the clock gave the Profs a seven-point advantage (18-11). At the 6:47 mark, forward Jordan Ogden (fr. Downingtown, PA/Bishop Shannanhan) made two free throws and Neumann trailed by five (23-18). Rowan ended the period with a 13-6 run. Matthews paced all first-half scorers with 11 points. Walker had 10 points for Neumann.

The Profs return to action after the holiday break at Wesley College on Monday, January 6 at 6 p.m.
