Box Score WAYNE, NJ – The Rowan University men's basketball team lost at William Paterson University, 103-63 in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) game on Wednesday night.
The Pioneers had five players in double figures. Guard Sandy Burgos (jr. Fort Lee, NJ/Fort Lee) led the way with 24 points and seven rebounds. Guard Bright Mensah (so. Hackensack, NJ/Hackensack) followed with 22 points while guard Javae King-Gilchrist (sr. Teaneck, NJ/Teaneck) contributed with 19. King-Gilchrist collected seven assists, seven steals and six rebounds. Guard Jaques Conceicao (jr. Massama-Lisboa, Portugal/Francais Charle Lepierre) recorded a double-double with 12 points and 10 boards. Guard Zack Frick (fr. Sparta, NJ/Sparta) chipped in with 10 points off the bench.
William Paterson has a 6-2 record with a 3-1 conference mark. Rowan is 5-4 overall and 2-3 in the NJAC. For the Profs, guard Rich McNamara (sr. Southampton, NJ/Seneca) scored 14 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Guard Tim McDaniels (sr. Mount Holly, NJ/Lenape) registered 13 points and forward Jason Sofman (sr. West Milford, NJ/West Milford) added eight.
The Pioneers started the game with a 24-9 run in 7:46. King-Gilchrist scored 12 of the 24 points. Rowan trailed 26-13 at 10:42 after a basket by center Dan Brogan (so. Northvale, NJ/Northern Valley Old Tappan). William Paterson had 10 straight points for a 23-point advantage (36-13) with 7:54 remaining. Mensah produced five points, Burgos hit a three and Conceicao had a dunk. Burgos' two foul shots at 5:19 made the score 43-18. At 2:03, the Pioneers had a 27-point lead (53-26) with a three-pointer by forward Nick Smith (fr. Elmwood Park, NJ/Memorial). William Paterson was ahead 55-33 at the break. Burgos and Mensah each tallied 13 points in the period while King-Gilchrist scored 12.
Rowan hosts the Rohrer College of Business Classic on Friday and Saturday, December 13 and 14. On Friday, Berkeley College plays College of Faith (AR) at 6 p.m. followed by the University of Maine at Fort Kent against Rowan at 8 p.m. The consolation game is at noon on Saturday and the championship is slated for 2 p.m.
