Box Score CAMDEN, NJ – The Rowan University men's basketball team lost at Rutgers-Camden, 85-69 in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) game on Wednesday night.
Forward Teon Russell (jr. Camden, NJ/Woodrow Wilson) led the way with a game-high 23 points. He also grabbed eight rebounds. Guard/forward Steven Schneider (so. Berlin, NJ/Eastern Reg.) came off the bench for 14 points. Guards Alex Smart (jr. Sicklerville, NJ/Timber Creek) and Marcus Taylor (fr. Somerdale, NJ/Sterling) each contributed with 13 points. Smart also registered seven boards and five assists. Guard John Tatem (so. Camden, NJ/Pennsauken Tech) chipped in with 12 points and five rebounds.
The Scarlet Raptors are 1-2 overall and 1-0 in the conference. The Profs have a 2-3 record with a 0-2 NJAC mark. For Rowan, guard Tim McDaniels (sr. Mount Holly, NJ/Lenape) scored 27 points. Guard Rich McNamara (sr. Southampton, NJ/Seneca) totaled 18 points and 11 rebounds. Forward Jason Sofman (sr. West Milford, NJ/West Milford) added 12 points and eight boards. Guard Jason Rosenberg (sr. Wayne, NJ/Wayne Valley) had six assists.
In the first half, Russell hit a three-pointer and made a foul shot at 14:44, which tied the score at 10. Rowan followed with a 7-1 spurt for a six-point advantage with 12 minutes remaining. McNamara scored four points, Sofman had two and McDaniels had a free throw. Rutgers-Camden took the lead (20-17) after nine straight points. Taylor had five of the nine points. The Scarlet Raptors were ahead by eight (34-26) after Tatem's layup with 4:01 left. With 1:33 on the clock, Schneider sank a three, which made the score 41-31. McDaniels had a jumper (1:23) and a foul shot (0:07) to trail 41-34 at the intermission. He ended the half with 20 points while Russell collected 16.
Rowan pulled within three points (41-38) after two baskets by McNamara to start the second stanza. Rutgers-Camden had a seven point lead (49-42) after Schneider's layup at 14:09. The Profs had a 6-0 run to cut the deficit to one (49-48) with 13:05 remaining. Sofman and McNamara both had a basket and a free throw. McDaniels' two fouls shots at 12:01 tied the score at 50. The Scarlet Raptors used a 17-7 run to pull away 67-57 with 6:22 left. The Profs were down by six points (67-61) at 4:44 after Rosenberg's jumper. Smart hit a jump shot at 3:28, making the score 73-61. With 2:44 remaining, Rutgers-Camden led 74-64 and it ended the contest with an 11-5 run.
Next, Rowan plays Rosemont College on Saturday, November 30 at noon. The game will be held at Neumann University as part of the D3 Coaches versus Cancer tripleheader. Cabrini College faces Widener University at 2 p.m. followed by Richard Stockton College against Neumann at 4:30 p.m.
