Women's Basketball Loses At Montclair State, 98-58

MONTCLAIR, NJ – The Montclair State University women's basketball team defeated visiting Rowan University, 98-58 on Saturday.  It was the conference opener for both teams.

The Red Hawks had five players in double figures.  Forward Melissa Tobie (jr. Elizabeth, NJ/Roselle Catholic) led the way with 20 points.  Guard Janitza Aquino (jr. Kearny, NJ/Kearny) contributed with 16 points and guard Sandra Gee (so. Allentown, PA/Emmaus) came off the bench for 12.  Guards Nicoisa Henry (sr. Bolingbrook, IL/Bolingbrook) and Rachael Krauss (fr. Farmingdale, NJ/Colts Neck) each chipped in with 11 points.  Guard Jenny Malone (jr. North Plainfield, NJ/Roselle Catholic) grabbed six rebounds.  She also had five assists along with Aquino. 

Montclair State is undefeated with a 3-0 record while Rowan is 0-4 overall.  For the Profs, guard Valerie Garofalo (fr. Ventnor, NJ/Holy Spirit) scored 12 points and guard Alex Raring (fr. Linwood, NJ/Mainland Reg.) registered 10. Guard Kaitlin Schullstrom (so. Colts Neck, NJ/Colts Neck) produced nine points while guard Bria Hill (jr. Atlantic City, NJ/Atlantic City had seven. 

In the first half, the Profs trailed by two (8-6) after a basket by Schullstrom at 16:43.  The Red Hawks followed with an 11-2 run to lead by 11 points (19-8) with 14:02 remaining.  Tobie registered eight points and Krauss had a three-pointer.  Gee made two foul shots at 10:30 and the score was 26-12.  Montclair State was ahead 26-14 at 10:23 then scored 15 straight points to lead by 27 (41-14) with 5:08 on the clock.  Tobie scored eight points, Aquino had six points and guard Sarah Kluth (sr. Lynbrook, NY/St. Mary's) had one free throw.  Tobie's jumper at 3:50 and the score was 46-18.  Schullstrom had a layup and foul shot at 1:58, which made the score 49-27.  The Red Hawks had a 23 point advantage (53-30) at the break.  Tobie led all scorers in the period with 18 points and Aquino tallied 14.
       
Next, Rowan plays at conference opponent Rutgers-Camden on Tuesday, November 26 at 6 p.m.
