ALLENTOWN, PA – The Rowan University women's basketball team fell to Catholic University, 85-47 on Saturday in the consolation game of the Scotty Wood Tournament hosted by Muhlenberg College.
Guard Jade Bonder (jr. Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) led Rowan with 11 points. Center Kate Matthews (so. Clark, NJ/Arthur L. Johnson) added six points and 11 rebounds, while guard Kaitlin Schullstrom (so. Colts Neck, NJ/Colts Neck) scored eight points. Matthews was named to the All-Tournament Team.
Catholic was led by guard Jayni Webster (so. Bryn Mawr, PA/Country Day Sacred Heart) who poured in 21 points. Guard Emily Grabiak (sr. Haddonfield, NJ/Haddonfield) recorded a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Forward Liz Briones (sr. San Antonio, TX/Antonio Prep) grabbed 10 rebounds and added seven points.
Catholic started the game on a 19-0 run that took 9:13 off the clock in the first half. Webster scored seven points during the run. Rowan then scored the next eight points to cut the deficit to 19-8 at the 8:31 mark. Four different Profs scored baskets during the spurt.
The Cardinals pushed their lead back up to 17 points (28-11) on two free throws by Briones with 3:57 to play. A three-pointer by Bonder at 1:58 got Rowan back to within 11 (28-17). Grabiak scored four of the final six points of the half and Catholic took a 35-21 lead into the break.
Catholic started the second half on an 8-2 run to get its lead up to 20 points (43-23). Matthews made the score 45-27 at the 16:12 mark, but Catholic then scored five straight for its largest lead of 23 points (50-27) with 14:43 remaining in the second half.
The Profs scored the next 12 points, cutting the deficit to 50-39 with 10:21 on the clock. Schullstrom scored six points during the run. Catholic then used the next eight minutes to go on a 28-5 run and take a 78-44 lead with 2:19 to play in the game. The Cardinals scored the last three points of the second half to make the final score 85-47.
Rowan will face Delaware Valley College in its home opener on Wednesday, November 20 at 6 p.m.
