Box Score CHESTER, PA – The Rowan University men's basketball team defeated Berkeley College, 89-60 in the consolation game of the Widener Tip-Off for Autism Awareness on Saturday afternoon. The win marked Joe Cassidy's 300th career coaching victory.
Rowan forward Jason Sofman (sr. West Milford, NJ/West Milford) and guard Matt Whitworth (sr. Ocean City, NJ/Ocean City) each scored 17 points. Guard Phil Jackson (sr. Mount Laurel, NJ/Lenape) contributed with 11 points and nine rebounds. Guard Josh Borrelli (fr. Medford, NJ/Shawnee) came off the bench for 10 points. Guard Rich McNamara (sr. Southampton, NJ/Seneca) collected eight points and 11 boards. Guard Tim McDaniels (sr. Mount Holly, NJ/Lenape) chipped in with eight points. Guard Jason Rosenberg (sr. Wayne, NJ/Wayne Valley) had seven assists.
The Profs are 1-1 on the season. In the first round on Friday, Rowan lost to Delaware Valley College, 102-94 in two overtimes and Widener beat Berkeley, 112-76.
For Berkeley (2-3), guard Hassan Abdullah (so. Trenton, NJ/Trenton Central) produced 13 points. Forward Dukens Germain (so. Maplewood, NJ/Columbia) grabbed 12 rebounds and had 10 points.
Rowan started the game with a 12-6 run that ended at 15:22. Sofman contributed with six points, McNamara had four and guard Kris O'Connor (so. Mount Laurel, NJ/Paul VI) made two foul shots. The Knights trailed by two points (16-14) at 11:46 after a three-pointer by Germain. The Profs led 24-20 with 6:54 remaining then had an 8-0 spurt for a 12-point advantage (32-20) at 4:41. Whitworth sank two foul shots and had a three in the run and Sofman added a layup and free throw. With 4:01 remaining, the Profs ended the half with a 9-2 run for a 14-point lead (41-27). Jackson scored six points and McDaniels added three. Sofman ended the period with 13 points.
The Profs opened the second stanza with 10 straight points to lead by 24 (51-27) at 15:54. McDaniels and Sofman each had two baskets and Jackson added one. Whitworth nailed a three (13:56) and Rosenberg hit a jumper (13:14), which made the score 61-30. The closest the Knights came were 25 points, 64-39 at 9:46 and 68-43 at 7:52. Rowan was ahead by 35 points (43-78) at 5:29 after eight straight points. Whitworth and Borrelli each made a three-pointer and in between forward Chris Gross (so. Cranford, NJ/Roselle Catholic) had two foul shots.
Rowan hosts Penn State Brandywine in the home opener on Wednesday, November 20th at 8 p.m.
