CAMDEN, NJ – The Rowan University men’s basketball team had a 75-64 victory at Rutgers-Camden in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) game on Wednesday night.
The Profs improve to 13-5 overall and 7-5 in the conference. The Scarlet Raptors have a 7-12 record with a 4-8 conference mark.
Rowan was led by guard Kendall White (sr. Lumberton, NJ/Rancocas Valley Reg.) with 18 points, five rebounds, four assists and two steals. Center Dee Benson (sr. Somerdale, NJ/Sterling) registered a season-high 16 points, four boards, four assists and three steals. Guard Rich McNamara (jr. Southampton, NJ/Seneca) contributed with 10 points. Guard Jason Rosenberg (jr. Wayne, NJ/Wayne Valley) added eight points, eight assists and five steals. Guard Fred Battee (sr. West Deptford, NJ/West Deptford) scored eight points.
For Rutgers-Camden, forward Teon Russell (so. Camden, NJ/Woodrow Wilson) compiled game-highs with 29 points and 12 rebounds. Guard Yusuf Leary (sr. Portland, OR/Lincoln) collected 15 points. Guard Woody Redding (jr. Philadelphia, PA/Northeast Catholic) chipped in with nine assists and seven rebounds. Forward Robert Anders (jr. Vero Beach, FL/Vero Beach) tallied seven points and five boards.
The Scarlet Raptors were ahead, 16-15 following a jumper by guard Germir Pitts (sr. Camden, NJ/Camden) at 11:52 in the first period. The Profs went on a 13-0 run to take a 12 point lead (28-16) at 7:10. Guard Matt Whitworth (jr. Ocean City, NJ/Ocean City), Rosenberg and McNamara each hit a three-pointer, while guard Daniel Waynick (so. Twin Rivers, NJ/Hightstown) and Benson both had a basket. The score was 30-18 after a layup by center Dan Brogan (fr. Northvale, NJ/Northern Valley Old Tappan).
Rutgers-Camden answered with a 9-0 surge to pull within three (30-27) at 4:30. Guard/forward Steven Schneider (fr. Berlin, NJ/Eastern Reg.) nailed two three-pointers and Russell had one. Leary sunk a three and the Scarlet Raptors trailed by three (33-30) with 2:50 on the clock. Rowan closed out the half with a 9-0 spurt. Rosenberg (2:00), Battee (:53) and White (:16) all made a three-pointer. The Profs were up, 42-30 at the intermission. White totaled 11 points in the first half. Russell posted nine points and six boards.
McNamara’s layup at 19:51 in the second stanza pushed the advantage to 14 (44-30). At 15:31, Rowan was on top, 46-36. Leary hit back-to-back three-pointers at 15:25 and 14:53) to bring the Scarlet Raptors within four (46-42). Rowan was ahead by five (50-45) following a basket by Waynick at 12:20. Russell had jumpers at 12:05 and 11:28 and Rutgers-Camden was down by one (50-49). The Profs scored nine straight points for a 59-49 lead at 7:45. White collected three points, while guard Phil Jackson (jr. Mount Laurel, NJ/Lenape), Rosenberg and Benson all had two.
With 5:03 remaining, White converted two free throws and Rowan was up by 10 (65-55). Russell recorded baskets at 4:52 and 3:56 to come within six (65-59). The score was 68-62 with 2:49 left to play. The Profs had the next seven points for a 75-62 advantage at the 45 second mark. Benson collected four points and McNamara had three. Russell’s layup (:26) ended the scoring.
