YORK, PA – The Rowan University women’s volleyball team took third place at the Spartan Invitational. On Saturday, the Profs defeated York College (PA), 3-1 and Grove City College, 3-1.
The two-day tournament was hosted by York. On Friday night, Rowan (12-6) lost to Eastern University, 3-0 and topped Centenary College, 3-0.
Against York (5-19), the set scores were 20-25, 25-19, 25-17 and 26-24. Outside hitter/middle blocker Morgan Mende (fr. Glen Rock, NJ/Glen Rock) registered 14 kills and three blocks. She produced a .579 hitting percentage. Outside hitter Katie Havlicek (sr. Midland Park, NJ/Immaculate Heart Academy) posted 10 kills, 11 digs and three blocks. Outside hitter/middle blocker Krissy Collins (jr. Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) added 10 kills. Setter Nicole Ciandella (jr. Hoboken, NJ/Roselle Catholic) tallied 44 assists and 12 digs. Libero Lauren Ruffalo (jr. Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) chipped in with 20 digs, while defensive specialist Casey Grasso (jr. Wilmington, DE/Alexis I. duPont) had 16.
For the Spartans, outside hitter Dani Mastroieni (sr. Chalfont, PA/Gwynedd Mercy Academy) totaled 15 kills, while middle hitter Katie Huston (so. Ellicott City, MD/Mount Hebron) and outside hitter Emma Geisser (fr. Derwood, MD/Magruder) each had 10. Setter Allie Donahue (fr. Harrisburg, PA/Central Dauphin) compiled 33 assists, 15 digs and four service aces. Libero Ashley Rineman (sr. Hanover, PA/Delone Catholic) collected 26 digs.
Versus Grove City (9-8), the set scores were 25-20, 25-23, 19-25 and 25-20. Havlicek led the way with 17 kills and 13 digs. Middle blocker Nikki Binetti (so. Brick, NJ/Brick Twp.) and Collins contributed with 17 and 14 kills respectively. Ciandella accumulated 57 assists and 10 digs. Ruffalo had a match-high 28 digs and Grasso added 15.
For the Wolverines, outside hitter Elisabeth Willits (sr. Hatfield, PA/North Penn) and middle hitter Ashley Branch (jr. Colorado Springs, CO/Evangelical Christian) both recorded 13 kills. Willits also had 10 digs and three service aces. Setter Amy Collins (so. Landenberg, PA/Lancaster Mennonite) tallied 21 assists and setter Amy Trageser (fr. Marriottsville, MD/Chapelgate Christian) had 10. Defensive specialist Frances Trenta (so. Hartville, OH/Uniontown Lake) chipped in with 16 digs.
Rowan travels to Rutgers-Camden for a conference match on Thursday, October 4 at 7 p.m.
