TROY, NY – The Rowan University field hockey team defeated Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in a nonconference game on Saturday, 3-1.
Rowan improves to 7-3 overall while Rensselaer drops to 5-3. RPI scored the first goal at 17:55 when forward Liana Viaggio (so. Mahopac, NY/Mahopac) capitalized on a pass from forward Carlie Newcomb (sr. Southwick, MA/Southwick Tolland Reg.).
The Profs evened the score at halftime after forward Kellie Campbell (so. Clark, NJ/Arthur L. Johnson) buried a shot (32:26) from six yards out into the cage. Midfielder Karlee Henderson (so. Elmer, NJ/Woodstown) earned the assist. Back Kelsey O’Neill (sr. Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) scored the game winning goal at 58:09 off a penalty corner from back Erin Bernat (sr. Glassboro, NJ/Glassboro). Henderson hit the back of the cage at 69:25 off a pass from forward Amy McKeever (jr. West Deptford, NJ/West Deptford).
Rowan totaled 25 shots while RPI had 11. Profs’ goalie Jen Goldberg (sr. Clark, NJ/Arthur L. Johnson) made five saves. For the Engineers, goalie Hannah Clough (so. Acton, MA/Acton-Boxborough Reg.) stopped seven shots.
