MONTCLAIR, NJ – The Montclair State University men’s soccer team defeated Rowan University, 2-1 on Wednesday night. It was the first conference game for both teams.
The Red Hawks, ranked second in the South Atlantic Region, are undefeated with a 5-0 record. Montclair State is also tied for 12th in the national rankings. The Profs are 2-2 overall.
Forward Trey Leggett (fr. Stockton, NJ/Hunterdon Central) scored both of the Red Hawks’ goals. He recorded the game-winner at 57:19 when he knocked a rebound into the right side of the net. The loose ball came following a shot by midfielder Lucas Terci (fr. Union, NJ/Union).
MSU got on the scoreboard first at 19:34. Leggett headed in a cross by forward Almir Batista (fr. Kearny, NJ/Kearny). Back Jared Mangone (sr. Princeton Jct., NJ/West Windsor-Plainsboro N.) tied the score 35 seconds later. Midfielder Dylan Smith (jr. Hamilton, NJ/Steinert) had a pass from 25 yards that Mangone headed into the Red Hawks’ goal.
Montclair State collected 19 shots while Rowan took 15. Goalkeeper Anthony Rogic (sr. Boonton, NJ/Morris Catholic) made four saves in the Red Hawks’ net. For the Profs, goalie Ryan Gill (jr. West Deptford, NJ/West Deptford) turned away seven shots.
Next, Rowan hosts Stevenson University on Saturday, September 15 at 1 p.m.
