GLASSBORO, NJ – The SUNY Geneseo women’s lacrosse team had a 17-13 victory over Rowan University in a nonconference game on Tuesday afternoon.
It was the Blue Knights’ first game of the season. The Profs have a 1-2 record. SUNY Geneseo was led by midfielder Lea Paris (jr. Henrietta, NY/Rush-Henrietta) with four goals. Attack Caroline Buonocore (so. Syracuse, NY/Westhill) posted three goals and one assist. Attack Katey Hart (fr. Syracuse, NY/West Genesee) registered three goals. Midfielders Rachel Petrone (jr. Rochester, NY/Penfield) and Emily Haggerty (so. Syracuse, NJ/Westhill) added two goals and one assist apiece. Midfielder Kim Magee (sr. Fairport, NY/Fairport), attack Meredith Weber (so. Bellport, NY/Bellport) and defender Kylie Caesar (so. Delmar, NY/Bethlehem) all found the net once.
For Rowan, attack Becca Wood (fr. Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill E.) scored four goals off the bench. Midfielder Jamie Blondina (fr. Toms River, NJ/Toms River S.) tallied two goals and one assist. Midfielder Michelle Lubrano (sr. Delanco, NJ/Holy Cross) compiled two goals, while defender Shannon O’Brien (jr. Kendall Park, NJ/South Brunswick) and attack Vicky Sucharski (so. Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson) both had one goal and one assist. Attacks Marissa Micciche (so. Kinnelon, NJ/Kinnelon), Ellen Brigham (jr. Oakton, VA/Oakton) and Caitlin Ravel (jr. Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) each scored once.
SUNY Geneseo took 33 shots and Rowan had 30. Blue Knights’ goalie Julie Bernatzky (jr. Mt. Sinai, NY/Mt. Sinai) made 10 saves. Profs’ goalie Lindsay Barrie (so. Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) stopped 13 shots in 56:14. Goalie Kerry Pehnke (sr. West Windsor, NJ/West Windsor-Plainsboro N.) played 3:46.
Paris’ first goal came on a pass from Petrone at 5:21 in the first period. Brigham tied the game (1-1) with a goal at 6:12. Sucharski picked up the assist. Hart (7:51) and Caesar (8:25) had back-to-back goals to give Geneseo a 3-1 lead. Lubrano converted a free position attempt at 14:59. Hart (16:11) and Micciche (18:53) exchanged free position goals to make the score, 4-3. Magee found the net on a feed from Haggerty at 23:28.
Wood’s goal at 25:45 brought Rowan within one (5-4). The Blue Knights went up by four (8-4) following two goals by Buonocore (26:09, 26:44) and one by Paris (27:21). Sucharski and O’Brien scored at 29:33 and 29:59 respectively to bring the Profs within two (8-6) at halftime.
In the second stanza, Haggerty had an unassisted goal at 30:49. Paris followed with a goal nine seconds later to increase the advantage to four (10-6). Wood’s second goal came at 32:58. Paris countered with an unassisted goal at 33:46. Rowan recorded three straight goals to pull within one (11-10) at 39:56. Blondina registered two goals (34:46, 39:56) and Ravel had one (38:10).
Geneseo answered with three consecutive goals to push the lead to four (14-10). Hart posted a free position goal (40:31), while Weber (41:11) and Buonocore (43:06) both had unassisted goals. Wood’s goal at 46:01 cut the deficit to three (14-11). Petrone hit the net on a free position shot at 49:34. Haggerty added a goal at 50:53 and Petrone followed with her second goal at 51:49. Lubrano scored on a free position attempt at 55:47 and Rowan trailed by five (17-12). Wood scored on a pass from Blondina with 1:05 remaining.
Rowan travels to Myrtle Beach, SC for spring break. The Profs will play Roger Williams University on Tuesday, March 13 at 2 p.m. and Messiah College on Thursday, March 15 at noon.
