Tyburski Finishes Eighth In 100 Freestyle For All-America Honors At NCAA Championships

INDIANAPOLIS, IN – Rowan University’s Max Tyburski finished eighth in the 100 freestyle for All-America honors at the NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships on Saturday night.  The national championships were held at the Indiana University Natatorium.

Tyburski (jr. Burke, VA/Lake Braddock Secondary) had a time of 45.23.  In the morning prelims, he swam a school record time of 44.66.  The old mark was 45.04, which was held by Eric Dinsmore (March 1997). 

In the 100 freestyle, Larry Dow (so. Alexandria, VA/T.C. Williams) finished 23rd in 45.55.  Bill Malone (sr. Sewell, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) had a time of 46.07 for 32nd place.   Kenyon College’s Zachary Turk won the 100 freestyle with a NCAA record time (43.16).   

On Wednesday, Tyburski earned All-America with a seventh place (20.49) in the 50 freestyle.  In the prelims, he broke the University mark with a time of 20.37.  The previous record was 20.51 and Dinsmore (March 1997) was the record holder.

The 400 freestyle relay was disqualified in the prelims on Saturday morning.  Rowan received All-America honorable mention in the 200 and 800 freestyle relays and the 200 and 400 medley relays.  The 200 and 800 free relays finished 11th (1:23.34) and 13th (6:46.30) respectively.  Tyburski, Dow, Bill Malone and Pat Malone (so. Sewell, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) were on the 200 free relay.  The 800 freestyle relay of Dow, Tyburski, Tim Dimond (jr. Allentown, PA/Emmaus) and Bill Malone broke the University mark of (6:48.46) that was from earlier this season.  Dow swam the first 200 yards in 1:41.02, which broke the school record (1:42.52, 2011) that was held by Bill Malone.   

The 400 medley relay came in 13th (3:24.20) and the 200 medley relay finished 15th (1:33.33).  Both medley relays consisted of Dow, Dan Bower (sr. Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.), Tyburski and Bill Malone.

Rowan finished tied for 17th in the team scoring among 52 schools.  Denison University took first place for the second straight year.  Kenyon College was second followed by Emory University third.  The top five included Massachusetts Institute of Technology fourth and the University of Redlands fifth.
