INDIANAPOLIS, IN – Rowan University’s Christie Raleigh and Max Tyburski earned All-America honors in the 50 freestyle at the NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships on Wednesday night. The national championships continue Thursday-Saturday, March 22-24 at the Indiana University Natatorium.
Raleigh (jr. Toms River, NJ/Pine Crest School (FL)) came in second with a time of 23.09. She swam 23.18 in the morning prelims and was tied for second going into the final. Both of her times improved on the school record (23.55) that she held. Prior to the NCAAs, Raleigh had the seventh best time (23.55) among the national qualifiers.
Tyburski (jr. Burke, VA/Lake Braddock Secondary) finished seventh in 20.49. In the prelims, he broke the University mark with a time of 20.37. He qualified for nationals with a time of 20.59. The Rowan record of 20.51 was previously held by Eric Dinsmore (March 1997).
The men’s 200 medley relay took 15th place for All-America honorable mention. The relay had a time of 1:33.33 in the consolation final with Larry Dow (so. Alexandria, VA/T.C. Williams), Dan Bower (sr. Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.), Tyburski and Bill Malone (sr. Sewell, NJ/Gloucester Catholic). They swam 1:32.74 in the morning, which broke the school record. The old mark was 1:33.41 that was held by Matt Brickley, Glenn Thomsen, Dinsmore and Mike Johnson (March 1996). Rowan qualified for the NCAAs in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:34.04.
The women’s 50 freestyle (23.00) was won by Springfield College’s Kellie Pennington and the men’s champion in the 50 free (19.52) was Kenyon College’s Zachary Turk. In the prelims, Turk swam 19.38, which was a NCAA meet record. The winner in the men’s 200 medley relay was Kenyon with a time of 1:28.86.
On Thursday, Raleigh will compete in the 100 butterfly and the men are swimming in the 200 freestyle and 400 medley relays. The prelims start in the morning at 10 a.m. and the finals begin in the evening at 6 p.m.
