Rowan Falls to 12th Ranked Messiah College, 14-11

MYRTLE BEACH, SC – The Rowan University women’s lacrosse team lost to 12th ranked Messiah College, 14-11 on Thursday.  The Profs played two games on their spring break trip to Myrtle Beach.

Messiah is undefeated with a 6-0 record while Rowan is 2-3 on the season.  Midfielder Rachel Dirksen (sr. Glenside, PA/Abington) led the Falcons with five goals and two assists.  Attacks Gabrielle Hamelryck (jr. Annapolis, MD/home schooled) and Meghan Doolittle (sr. Tabernacle, NJ/Seneca) and midfielder Carly Bajus (fr. Arnold, MD/Rockbridge Academy) each contributed with two goals.  Attack Kiersten McGreer (jr. Edgewater, MD/Annapolis Area Christian), defender Rachel Coyle (sr. Harleysville, PA/Souderton Area) and midfielder Madi Brunk (fr. Wyncote, PA/Cheltenham) chipped in with one goal apiece.  Midfielder Jaime Gerhart (sr. Ephrata, PA/Ephrata) and Brunk each had one assist.

For the Profs, attack Becca Wood (fr. Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill E.) totaled three goals and two assists.  Midfielder Michelle Lubrano (sr. Delanco, NJ/Holy Cross) followed with two goals and two assists while attack Marissa Micciche (so. Kinnelon, NJ/Kinnelon) scored twice.  Midfielder Jamie Blondina (fr. Toms River, NJ/Toms River S.) and attack Vicky Sucharski (so. Collingswood, NJ/Collingswood) each produced one goal and two assists.  Attack Caitlin Ravel (jr. Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) added one goal and one assist.  Attack Ellen Brigham (jr. Oakton, VA/Oakton) had one goal.

Messiah totaled 35 shots while Rowan took 29.  Falcon goalie Taylor Phillips (jr. Berlin, MD/Stephen Decatur) made 12 saves.  Prof goalie Lindsay Barrie (so. Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) turned away nine shots.

With 2:20 left in the first half, McGreer scored on a pass from Gerhart to lead by three (7-4).  Brigham hit the net a minute later with an assist from Ravel.  Micciche cut the deficit to one (7-6) at the break on a free position shot with four seconds left on the clock.

Doolittle made the score 8-6 with an assist by Brunk 6:18 into the second period.  Rowan then had four straight to go ahead 10-8.  Blondina connected with Wood for the first one (37:56).  Sucharski found the net (39:38) with an assist from Lubrano.  Wood recorded the next two (43:33, 44:01) with assists from Sucharski and Blondina respectively.

The Falcons went up 14-10 after scoring six unanswered goals.  The score was tied at 10 after goals by Dirksen (44:33) and Brunk (45:52).  Dirksen put Messiah back on top at 46:06.  Doolittle (46:37), Bajus (47:23) and Coyle (51:18) all followed with a goal.  Lubrano scored with a free position shot (54:35), which was the last goal of the game.

Rowan won the first game of its spring break trip against Roger Williams University, 23-10 (Mar. 13).  The Profs are back next week and they travel to Ursinus College on Thursday, March 22 for a 4 p.m. contest.
