Rowan Defeats The College Of New Jersey, 69-64

GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University men’s basketball team defeated The College of New Jersey, 69-64 in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) game on Saturday afternoon.

The Profs have a 10-12 record with a 4-7 conference mark.  The Lions are 8-15 overall and 2-9 in the NJAC.  Guard Rich McNamara (so. Southampton, NJ/Seneca) led Rowan with 23 points and 13 rebounds.  Guard Kendall White (jr. Lumberton, NJ/Rancocas Valley Reg.) added 12 points. 
Guard Phil Jackson (so. Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape) posted eight points.  Center Dee Benson (so. Somerdale, NJ/Sterling) grabbed six boards, while guard Jason Rosenberg (so. Wayne, NJ/Wayne Valley) dished five assists.

For TCNJ, guard Kyle Rawson (sr. Warren, NJ/Watchung Hills) registered 16 points and five rebounds.  Forward Alex Fox (so. Washington, NJ/Westwood Reg.) collected 12 points.  Forward Jason Chalmers (so. Oakland, NJ/Indian Hills) tallied 10 points and a team-high seven rebounds.  Guard Albert Matlock (sr. Trenton, NJ/Solebury Prep) chipped in with nine points.

Rowan was ahead, 32-27 at halftime.  White’s layup at 18:07 in the second stanza made the score, 35-31.  The Lions recorded the next five points to go up by one (36-35) at 15:53.  Albert Matlock and Rawson each sunk two free throws and Chalmers had one.  At 15:06, Chalmers had a basket for a one point advantage (38-37).  Guard Matt Whitworth (so. Ocean City, NJ/Ocean City) hit a three-pointer (14:41) to give Rowan a two point lead (40-38).  Forward Dan Balevski (so. West Windsor, NJ/West Windsor-Plainsboro S.) converted one of two free throws at 14:23 and TCNJ trailed by one (40-39).  After a jumper by McNamara (12:16), Rawson’s three-pointer (11:47) tied the game (42-42).

Rowan was ahead ,47-46 at 9:12.  The Profs went on an 8-2 run for a seven point advantage (55-48) at 7:01.  White compiled four of the eight points.  Guard Emmanuel Matlock’s (fr. Trenton, NJ/Solebury) three point play at 4:18 cut the deficit to four (55-51).  Rowan had a 7-0 surge to pull away, 62-51 with 2:31 remaining.  Jackson collected three points, while White and McNamara each had two.  Whitworth’s three-pointer at 1:32 extended the lead to 13 (67-54).  Rawson (1:14) and Emmanuel Matlock (:39) answered with back-to-back layups to come within nine (67-58).  Fox nailed a three-pointer with 20 seconds left to make the score, 67-61.  After two foul shots by McNamara (:14), Fox sunk a three with nine seconds on the clock.  Rawson totaled 11 points in the second half.

TCNJ was on top, 11-10 at 13:17 in the first period after a jumper by Chalmers.  Rosenberg and McNamara had layups at 11:19 and 9:41 respectively to give Rowan a three point lead (14-11).  At 7:26, McNamara’s basket made the score, 21-17.  Fox followed with a three-pointer (6:41) to come within one (21-20).  Rowan had the next eight points for a 29-20 advantage at 3:59.  McNamara produced four of the eight points.  Albert Matlock hit a three-pointer (3:32) and the Lions trailed by six (29-23).  Benson (2:39) and Chalmers (1:49) each hit one of two foul shots.  Chalmers followed with a layup at 1:06 (30-26).  TCNJ was down by three (30-27) after Balevski’s free throw at the 38 second mark.  White sunk two foul shots (:04) to give Rowan a five point lead (32-27) at the intermission.

Rowan travels to Valley Forge Christian College for a nonconference game on Tuesday, February 7 at 8 p.m.
