NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ - The Rowan University women's swimming and diving team finished fifth out of 19 teams at the Metropolitan Championships on Sunday. The three day meet was held at Rutgers University.
Rowan compiled 839.5 points. The College of New Jersey took first place (1444 points) followed by C.W. Post, second (977 points). Rounding out the top five were Southern Connecticut State University, third (917.5 points) and the University of Bridgeport, fourth (908 points).
Christie Raleigh (jr. Toms River, NJ/Pine Crest School (FL)) won the 100 freestyle with a time of 51.04, which was a NCAA B cut (52.32). She broke the school record of 52.73 that she set earlier this season. Raleigh was named the Swimmer of the Meet. Allison Schneider (so. Cranford, NJ/Cranford) came in second in the 1650 freestyle (17:49.99). She surpassed the University mark of 17:51.77 by Jen Hodgins (1994). Adrienne Bush (so. Silver Spring, MD/James Hubert Blake) followed in seventh place (18:34.98).
The 400 freestyle relay of Gigi Russo (fr. Rumson, NJ/Rumson-Fair Haven Reg.), Teresa Stearns (jr. Absecon, NJ/Holy Spirit), Raleigh and Leanne Zaug (fr. Florham Park, NJ/Hanover Park) finished fourth with a time of 3:33.78. The relay topped the previous school record of 3:36.08 (2006).
In the one meter diving, Samantha Rottkamp (sr. Bridgeton, NJ/Cumberland Reg.) placed third with 435.90 points. Her totaled was better than her previous University mark of 434.20 in 2010. Catherine Anzano (jr. Ridgewood, NJ/Ridgewood) came in fourth (366.40 points) followed by her sister Rachel Anzano (fr. Ridgewood, NJ/Ridgewood), sixth (350.95 points). Kylie O’Rourke (jr. North Cape May, NJ/Lower Cape May Reg.) captured seventh with 344.55 points.
Russo had a 10th place in the 100 freestyle (53.67). Stearns and Zaug followed in 18th (55.11) and 20th (55.69) respectively. In the 200 backstroke, Lauren Grajek (so. Freehold, NJ/Freehold Twp.) was 13th (2:14.35) and Nicole Vick (fr. Sewell, NJ/Clearview Reg.) came in 23rd (2:22.56). Charlene Gustafson (so. Clifton, NJ/Clifton) took 16th in the 200 butterfly (2:18.96). Abby Grasso (so. Toms River, NJ/Toms River E.) was 17th (2:19.60) and Alyssa Schaefer (fr. Ringwood, NJ/DePaul Catholic) finished 18th (2:20.42).
Christie Carroll (so. Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) captured 17th (20:01.87) in the 1650 freestyle, while Kristy Hill (jr. Turnersville, NJ/Washington Twp.) was 20th (20:17.82). Casey Sickler (fr. Northfield, NJ/Mainland Reg.) placed 20th in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:41.53.
