GLASSBORO, NJ – The Berkeley College men’s basketball team won 78-74 over Rutgers-Camden on the second day of the Rohrer College of Business Classic on Saturday. The two-day classic was held at Rowan University.
The Knights are 4-6 overall while the Scarlet Raptors have a 3-5 record. On Friday night, Rutgers-Camden fell to Penn State Brandywine, 96-81 and Rowan defeated Berkeley, 92-76.
Guard Gary Williams led Berkeley with a game-high 27 points. Guard Isaac Robinson totaled 17 points and 10 rebounds. Forward Carl O’Neil chipped in with nine points and five boards. Guard Andrew Tomlin collected eight points, five assists, six steals and four rebounds.
For Rutgers-Camden, forward Teon Russell scored 20 points and grabbed 11 boards. Guard Germir Pitts contributed with 18 points. Guard Brandyn Wims added nine points while center Michael Williams and guard Woody Redding had eight apiece. Williams also pulled down seven rebounds and blocked four shots.
In the second period, Wims’ three-pointer at 19:26 tied the score at 41. The Scarlet Raptors then had three straight baskets to lead by six (47-41) at 17:25. Russell had two layups (17:47, 17:25) and guard Woody Redding had one (18:40). O’Neil hit two foul shots (16:43), Williams had one free throw (16:08) and Tomlin scored with a layup (15:52) for a tie game (47-47). Guard Hassan Abdullah’s layup and free throw (14:12) gave the Knights a four point advantage (52-48). Rutgers-Camden came back and knotted the score at 56 (9:26) after a layup and foul shot by Wims.
Berkeley answered with a 4-0 spurt to lead by four (60-56) with 8:13 remaining. Tomlin hit a jumper while Abdullah and Williams each had a free throw. Pitts’ three (6:37) and Russell’s layup (5:50) gave the Scarlet Raptors a one point lead (63-62). William’s layup at 5:10 put Berkeley ahead by three (66-63). Rutgers-Camden went up 68-66 (4:25) on a three by Redding. O’Neil sank two foul shots (3:27) and the Knights led by three (71-68). Pitts’ jump shot at 1:11 gave the Scarlet Raptors their last lead (74-73). Berkeley ended the contest with five straight points. Isaac Robinson had a basket and Williams made three foul shots.
Berkeley started the game with an 8-0 run in the first 2:33. O’Neil’s foul shot at 15:43 made the score 14-5. Pitt hit a three (15:08) to cut the deficit to four (14-10). Rutgers-Camden had three straight baskets that tied the score at 16 with 12:06 remaining. Russell contributed with two (14:04, 12:06) and Williams had one (13:00). Guard James Coleman nailed a three-pointer at 10:49, which gave Rutgers-Camden its first lead (19-18).
The Knights scored five straight points to go ahead 23-19 at 7:52. Darryl Robinson and Tomlin each produced two points and Williams added one. Berkeley was ahead 29-24 at 5:57 after a three-pointer by Williams. Forward Robert Anders’ layup (2:19) put Rutgers-Camden within one (31-30). Williams sank two free throws (1:36) for a five point advantage (35-30). At the 58 second mark, guard Tasheen Carrow hit a jump shot, which made the score 37-33. The Scarlet Raptors led by one (38-37) at the break after a three by Pitts and a layup by Russell.
