GLASSBORO, NJ – The Penn State Brandywine men’s basketball team defeated Rutgers-Camden, 96-81 in the first game of the Rohrer College of Business Classic on Friday evening. The two-day classic is hosted by Rowan University.
The Lions are 5-2 overall while the Scarlet Raptors have a 3-4 record. In the second game, Berkeley College (NJ) plays Rowan. On Saturday, Berkeley and Rutgers-Camden meet at noon while Penn State Brandywine faces Rowan at 2 p.m.
Guard/forward Frank McCusker led the way with a game-high 20 points off the bench. Guard Rasheed Wilkins totaled 18 points, 11 assists and six rebounds. Forward Dan Robinson contributed with 15 points and seven boards. Guard Da’Quan Timmons collected 11 points. Guard/forward Patrick McGee added nine points while guards Brandon Jacquette and Kristopher Cassidy each chipped in with eight.
For Rutgers-Camden, guard Brandyn Wims scored 16 points and guard Jason Richardson followed with 13. Guard Woody Redding registered 12 points while forward Teon Russell and guard Germir Pitts tallied 10 apiece.
The Lions started the second half with a four point deficit (44-40). Forward/center Michael Williams’ layup made the score 46-40 at 19:18. Penn State Brandywine tied it at 48 (17:14) with an 8-2 spurt. Cassidy hit a three (18:44) and a jumper (18:09). Wilkins had a three-pointer, which knotted the score. There were four more ties with the last one at 8:37 (65-65). Wims (8:22) had a layup for a two point advantage (67-65). Penn State hit three straight three-pointers to go up by seven (74-67) at 6:45. Wilkins was good for two threes and Robinson had one. The Lions never trailed again for the remainder of the contest.
Timmon’s layup at 4:19 pushed the lead to 10 (83-73). Wilkins (2:19) and McCusker (1:55) had back-to-back baskets for a 15 point (91-76) advantage. McCusker scored with layups at 1:31 and 1:16, which made the score 95-79. Robinson added a free throw at the 46 second mark. Redding sank two foul shots (:25) to end the game.
In the first half, Cassidy hit a three at 18:10 and the Lions had a six point lead (8-2). The Scarlet Raptors had a 9-0 run to go ahead 11-8 with 15:07 remaining. Richardson’s layup (13:45) and foul shot (12:24) made the score 16-10. Penn State Brandywine followed with 17 straight points for an 11 point advantage (27-16) at 8:56. McCusker totaled 12 points, which included three-three pointers. Timmons hit a three and Jacquette had a basket.
Rutgers-Camden answered with a 15-4 surge that tied the score at 31 with 3:59 left. Pitts had the tying basket with a jump shot. Jacquette (2:46) and forward Learon Pray (2:22) each hit a jumper to go ahead 36-33. McGee’s three-pointer with 1:19 on the clock made the score 40-35. Rutgers-Camden ended the period with nine unanswered points to lead by four (44-40) at the break. Redding produced four points while guard James Coleman and Richardson added three and two points respectively.
