GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University men’s basketball team defeated Berkeley College, 92-76 on the first day of the Rohrer College of Business Classic.
Rowan improves to 7-1, while Berkeley has a 3-6 record. Earlier on Friday, Penn State Brandywine topped Rutgers-Camden, 96-81. The two-day classic continues on Saturday, December 8. Berkeley plays Rutgers-Camden at noon followed by Penn State Brandywine against Rowan at 2 p.m.
Guard Rich McNamara (jr. Southampton, NJ/Seneca) led the Profs with 22 points and eight rebounds. Guard Matt Whitworth (jr. Ocean City, NJ/Ocean City) scored a career-high 20 points. Forward Brendan Cox (sr. Lindenwold, NJ/Highland Reg.) registered 15 points, seven rebounds and four blocks. Guard Jason Rosenberg (jr. Wayne, NJ/Wayne) tallied nine points and a career best 15 assists. He tied the school record for assists in a game held by Steve Thomas (2005). Center Dee Benson (sr. Somerdale, NJ/Sterling) pulled down seven boards.
For the Knights, guards Isaac Robinson (fr. Trenton, NJ/Conwell Egan Catholic) and Gary Williams (sr. Jersey City, NJ/Marist) posted 20 points apiece. Robinson grabbed a game-high 16 rebounds. Guard Darryl Robinson (fr. Somerset, NJ/Franklin) added 14 points and five boards. Guard Hassan Abdullah (fr. Trenton, NJ/Trenton Central) contributed with nine points off the bench.
Rowan jumped out a 10-3 lead in the first 2:06 of the game. McNamara recorded five points, Whitworth hit a three-pointer and Cox had a layup. Berkeley answered with 11 straight points for a four point advantage (14-10) at 15:49. Isaac Robinson compiled six points and Williams had five. At 12:02, the Knights were ahead, 16-12 after a layup by forward Russell Davis (fr. Lynchburg, VA/Wildwood). McNamara nailed back-to-back three-pointers at 11:52 and 10:36 to tie the game at 18. Darryl Robinson’s foul shot at 8:10 put Berkeley on top by one (22-21).
The Profs went on an 11-0 run to go up by 10 (32-22) at 4:44. Cox scored four points, McNamara had a three and guard Phil Jackson (jr. Mount Laurel, NJ/Lenape) and Whitworth each had two. Jackson’s three with 29 seconds left in the period extended the lead to 13 (40-27). Guard Tasheen Carrow (fr. New York, NY/Lacey Twp.) sunk a free throw with eight seconds on the clock to bring the Knights within 12 (40-28) at the intermission. McNamara totaled 14 first half points and Williams had 10.
At 19:16 in the second stanza, Whitworth connected on a three-pointer and the Profs were ahead by 17 (45-28). Berkeley cut the deficit to 10 (51-41) at 14:01 following two foul shots by Darryl Robinson. At 11:37, Darryl Robinson made a jumper and the score was 55-47. Rowan had a 7-0 surge for a 15 point advantage (62-47) at 10:31. Cox posted four of the seven points. At 7:06, center Dan Brogan (fr. Northvale, NJ/Northern Valley Old Tappan) had a layup and Rowan was on top by 19 (74-55). The closest the Knights came the rest of the way was 83-70 with 3:21 remaining after Williams’ two free throws. Whitworth tallied 15 points in the second half.
