JERSEY CITY, NJ – The Rowan University men’s basketball team won 67-57 over conference opponent New Jersey City University on Saturday.
The Profs are undefeated with a 6-0 record and they are 3-0 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference. The Gothic Knights are 1-4 overall and 0-3 in the conference.
Forward Brendan Cox (sr. Lindenwold, NJ/Highland Reg.) led Rowan with a career-high 21 points and 10 rebounds. Forward Matt Whitworth (jr. Ocean City, NJ/Ocean City) contributed with 15 points and seven boards. He tied his career mark in points and set a career high for rebounds. Guard Rich McNamara (jr. Southampton, NJ/Seneca) produced a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Guard Jason Rosenberg (jr. Wayne, NJ/Wayne Valley) and center Dee Benson (sr. Somerdale, NJ/Sterling) each chipped in with eight points. Rosenberg also collected 13 assists, which tied his career mark.
For NJCU, guard Khalid Muhammad (fr. Orange, NJ/Orange) scored 19 points and grabbed eight rebounds. Guard David Cole (so. Avenel, NJ/Colonial) registered 10 points while forwards Drew Marley (so. Maplewood, NJ/Columbia) and Matt Brewer (fr. Jersey City, NJ/University Academy) had eight apiece. Center David Jones (sr. Millville, NJ/Cumberland Reg.) totaled seven boards along with six points.
In the first half, Rowan center Dan Brogan (fr. Northvale, NJ/Northern Valley Old Tappan) had a layup at 17:06, which tied the score at four. NJCU built a six point advantage with a 10-4 run that ended at 13:20. Cole recorded three baskets, two were threes and Marley sank two foul shots. Muhammad’s three-pointer made the score 22-14 with 8:57 remaining. The Profs scored 15 straight points to go ahead by seven (29-22) at 1:08. Cox registered nine points and Whitworth added six. Jones had a layup with 49 seconds left and McNamara followed with a three at the 15 second mark. The Profs were up by eight (32-24) at the intermission. Whitworth was the scoring leader in the period with 12 points.
Rowan started the second half with an 8-2 run to lead by 14 (40-26) at 16:21. Cox and Whitworth each had three points and Benson added two. The Profs led by 16 (56-40) after a layup by McNamara at 8:27. Rosenberg’s basket at 7:44 made the score 58-42. In less than a three minute span, the Gothic Knights posted an 8-0 run and they trailed by eight points (58-50). With 3:42 left, Cox nailed a three that increased the lead to 10 (63-53). Cole followed with a jumper (3:05) then Cox had a tip-in (65-55). Muhammad hit two free throws (1:15) and NJCU was down by eight (65-57). McNamara had a layup as time expired. Cox tallied 12 points in the second period while Muhammad had 11.
Next, Rowan travels to Kean University on Wednesday, December 5 for an 8 p.m. conference game.
