CAMDEN, NJ – The Rutgers-Camden men’s soccer team defeated Rowan University, 3-0 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Championship Tournament final on Saturday night. It is the Scarlet Raptors' second straight conference title.
The second seed Rutgers-Camden (16-2-2) earns an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament. The Scarlet Raptors are ranked 18th in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of America Poll. Rowan, the fifth seed, finishes the season with a 12-8-2 record.
Back Matt Lanouette (sr. Hopewell, NJ/Hopewell Valley Central) gave Rutgers-Camden a 1-0 lead at 7:14 in the first period. He knocked in a loose ball in front of the net. Forward Mike Ryan (fr. Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) scored on a breakway at 10:15. Forward Mitch Grotti (jr. Milmay, NJ/Millville) picked up the assist. Ryan found the net again at 26:01. He kicked in a rebound after Grotti’s shot was saved by goalkeeper Michael Fanz-Huster (sr. Waterford, NJ/Hammonton).
Both teams took 17 shots. Scarlet Raptors’ goalkeeper Mike Randall (jr. Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill E.) made 10 saves. Fanz-Huster stopped two shots in 30:31. Goalkeeper Ryan Gill (jr. West Deptford, NJ/West Deptford) turned away three shots in 59:29.
