Men's Basketball Tops Rutgers-Camden, 85-78

GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University men’s basketball team had an 85-78 victory over Rutgers-Camden in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) game on Wednesday night.

The Profs are undefeated with a 5-0 overall record and a 2-0 conference mark.  The Scarlet Raptors are 2-2 overall and 1-1 in the NJAC.  Rowan was led by forward Brendan Cox (sr. Lindenwold, NJ/Highland Reg.) with 19 points and 12 rebounds.  Guard Jason Rosenberg (jr. Wayne, NJ/Wayne Valley) totaled 16 points and 10 assists.  He broke the school record for career assists with 348.  The previous mark was 340 by Kevin Burley (1976-79).  Guard Kendall White (sr. Lumberton, NJ/Rancocas Valley Reg.) registered 13 points and six rebounds.  Center Dee Benson (sr. Somerdale, NJ/Sterling) chipped in with 12 points, while guard Rich McNamara (jr. Southampton, NJ/Seneca) had nine.  Benson and McNamara both pulled down six boards.

For Rutgers-Camden, guard Brandyn Wims (jr. Philadelphia, PA/Cardinal Dougherty) scored a game-high 24 points.  Forward Teon Russell (so. Camden, NJ/Woodrow Wilson) compiled 22 points and nine rebounds.  Forward Robert Anders (jr. Vero Beach, FL/Vero Beach) tallied 14 point and 10 boards off the bench.  Guard Wood Redding (jr. Philadelphia, PA/Northeast Catholic) collected seven points and nine assists.

Rowan began the game with a 10-3 run over the first 3:34.  Cox and Rosenberg both scored three points, while Benson and White each had a basket.  White’s layup at 13:31 gave the Profs a seven point advantage (14-7).  Back-to-back layups by Russell at 13:19 and 12:45 cut the deficit to three (14-11).  The Scarlet Raptors trailed, 20-16 following Anders’ layup at 9:49.  White had a three point play (9:15) and Benson added two baskets (8:39, 8:17) to extend the lead to 11 (27-16).  Center Dan Brogan (fr. Northvale, NJ/Northern Valley Old Tappan) had a layup with 1:17 remaining to make the score, 43-30.  Redding hit a foul shot at 1:11 to bring Rutgers-Camden within 12 (43-31) at the intermission.  Rosenberg recorded 14 points and eight assists in the first half.  Russell and Anders had 12 points apiece for the Scarlet Raptors.

In the second period, Rutgers-Camden trailed by eight (43-35) after forward Michael Williams (jr. Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill W.) had a dunk (19:43) and Russell hit a jumper (18:34).  Rowan answered with layups by Benson (18:11) and Cox (16:55).  The lead was 14 (54-40) at 13:49.  Russell nailed a jumper (13:31) and Wims had a basket (12:29).  After Cox made one free throw (12:10), guard Germir Pitts (sr. Camden, NJ/Camden) had a layup to bring the Scarlet Raptors within nine (55-46) at 12:03.

The score was 57-48 following two foul shots by Russell at 11:09.  Rowan registered five straight points for a 14 point advantage (62-48) at 10:06.  Cox sank a free throw (10:50) while Rosenberg (10:25) and guard Matt Whitworth (jr. Ocean City, NJ/Ocean City) (10:06) each had a basket.  Rutgers-Camden recorded the next six points to come within eight (62-54) at 8:36.  Pitts, Wims and Russell all scored once.  White’s two foul shots at 7:37 extended the lead to 12 (66-54).  Wims nailed a three (7:20) and back-to-back layups at 6:50 and 6:36 to make the score 66-61.  Cox’s foul shot at 4:04 gave Rowan a six point advantage (73-67).  Benson hit one of two free throws with 2:24 left to go up by seven (78-71).  Wims nailed two foul shots (2:13) and McNamara had one (2:10).  Rutgers-Camden had a five point surge to pull within one (79-78) with 1:28 on the clock.  Wims made a basket, Redding had two free throws and Anders added one.  The Profs closed out the game making six of eight foul shots.  McNamara and White both converted two, while Whitworth and Cox each had one.

Rowan travels to NJAC opponent New Jersey City University on Saturday, December 1 at 4 p.m.
