Men's Basketball Defeats Immaculata, 73-63

GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University men’s basketball team defeated Immaculata University, 73-63 in a nonconference game on Monday night.

The Profs improve to 4-0, while the Mighty Macs fall to 0-4.  Rowan was led by guard Jason Rosenberg (jr. Wayne, NJ/Wayne Valley) with 18 points and six assists.  Guard Rich McNamara (jr. Southampton, NJ/Seneca) tallied 17 points and eight rebounds.  Guard Kendall White (sr. Lumberton, NJ/Rancocas Valley Reg.) compiled 14 points and six boards.  Forward Brendan Cox (sr. Lindenwold, NJ/Highland Reg.) contributed with seven points and seven rebounds.

For Immaculata, guard Nelson Torres (sr. Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) posted 13 points and forward Brandon Smith (jr. Philadelphia, PA/Central) followed with 12.  Forward Adam Jones (jr. Blue Bell, PA/North Penn) chipped in with 11 points.  Guard Kendall Peters (sr. Mount Laurel, NJ/Lenape) added eight points off the bench.

The Profs jumped out to a 4-0 lead after baskets by Rosenberg (19:15) and McNamara (18:38).  Rowan was on top, 9-6 at 16:53 following White’s layup.  Immaculata outscored Rowan, 10-3 over the next 4:40 for a four point advantage (16-12).  Smith recorded four points, while Nelson and Peters each hit a three-pointer.  Rosenberg had a layup (12:02) and center Dee Benson (sr. Somerdale, NJ/Sterling) sunk two free throws (11:28) to tie the game at 16. 

The score was 18-18 at 9:04.  Mighty Macs’ forward Lou Dominique (fr. Gilbertsville, PA/Archbishop Carroll) made a three-pointer at 8:45.  Rowan went on a 10-0 run for a seven point lead (28-21) at 3:58.  Cox and McNamara both nailed a three-pointer and Rosenberg and guard Matt Whitworth (jr. Ocean City, NJ/Ocean City) each had a basket.  Guard T.J. Klinger’s (sr. Audubon, PA/Methacton) three at 3:02 cut the deficit to four (28-24).  Rosenberg’s two foul shots with 14 seconds left made the score, 34-28.  Klinger’s jumper with three seconds remaining brought Immaculata within four (34-30) at the intermission.  Rosenberg led all first half scorers with 11 points.

Back-to-back jumpers by Dominique (19:45) and Jones (18:29) tied the game at 34.  The score was tied four more times with the final one (47-47) coming at 13:05.  After a layup by McNamara (12:26), Smith converted one of two free throws (11:32).  The Profs had the next seven points for an eight point advantage (56-48) at 9:38.  Whitworth made a three-pointer, Cox had a layup and center Dan Brogan (fr. Northvale, NJ/Northern Valley Old Tappan) sank two free throws.  The Mighty Macs cut the lead to three (56-53) following a three by Peters (9:08) and a jumper by Torres (8:08).

Torres’ basket at 6:57 made the score, 58-55.  McNamara had a three-pointer (6:21) and Benson nailed two foul shots (4:35) to go up by eight (63-55).  Smith connected on two free throws (4:18) and Dominique hit a jumper (3:54) to bring Immaculata within four (63-59).  White’s three-pointer (3:33) and foul shot (1:50) extended the lead to eight (67-59).  Smith had a free throw (1:49) and White followed with two (1:30).  Nelson made one of two foul shots at 1:23 and the deficit was eight (69-61).  Rosenberg sunk two free throws (:55) and McNamara had a layup (:29).  Jones’ jump shot with 18 seconds remaining ended the scoring.

Rowan hosts conference opponent Rutgers-Camden on Wednesday, November 28 at 8 p.m.
