GLASSBORO, NJ – Guard Matt Whitworth’s three-pointer with two seconds remaining gave Rowan University a 73-71 victory over Montclair State University in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) game on Tuesday night.
The Red Hawks were ahead, 69-66 with 4:01 left in the second period. Profs’ center Dee Benson (sr. Somerdale, NJ/Sterling) sunk two free throws at 2:05 to bring Rowan within one (69-68). Guard Daniel Singleton’s (jr. Neptune, NJ/Neptune) jumper at 1:48 made the score, 71-68. With 1:12 on the clock, guard Jason Rosenberg (jr. Wayne, NJ/Wayne Valley) had a layup and the Profs trailed by one (71-70). Forward Brendan Cox (sr. Lindenwold, NJ/Highland Reg.) stole the ball at the 45 second mark and Rowan called a timeout with 37 seconds left to set up a final play. Rosenberg dished the ball to Whitworth at the top of the three-point arc and he nailed the three for the win.
Rowan improves to 3-0, while Montclair State is 2-1. It was the first conference game for both teams. Center Dan Brogan (fr. Northvale, NJ/Northern Valley Old Tappan), Rosenberg, Cox and Whitworth all scored 12 points. Cox grabbed eight rebounds and Rosenberg collected nine assists. Guard Kendall White (sr. Lumberton, NJ/Rancocas Valley Reg.) contributed with eight points and Benson had seven.
For the Red Hawks, forward Ordel Goldson (jr. Hackettstown, NJ/Warren Hills) registered game-highs with 23 points and 19 rebounds. Forward Kevin McGorry (fr. Rutherford, NJ/Rutherford) compiled 15 points and 14 boards off the bench. Singleton added 13 points and guard Dwight Bostic (so. Roselle, NJ/Abraham Clark) had 11.
Montclair State led 39-36 at halftime. The game was tied seven times in the second period with the last one (61-61) coming at 9:01 after a jumper by McGorry. Singleton followed with two foul shots (8:24). Whitworth’s three-pointer at 8:09 gave Rowan a one point advantage (64-63). Goldson had a tip-in (7:23) and Brogan answered with a layup (6:36). McGorry (5:29) and Singleton (4:01) each had a basket to put the Red Hawks on top, 69-66. In the second half, Whitworth tallied 12 points and Brogan had 10. For Montclair State, Singleton recorded 12 points, while Goldson compiled nine points and 12 boards.
At 7:21 in the first stanza, the score was tied at 20. The Profs went on a 14-4 run to take a 10 point lead (34-24) at 4:08. White collected six of the 14 points. The Red Hawks cut the deficit to two (34-32) with an 8-0 surge. McGorry made two baskets, Bostic converted two free throws and Goldson hit a jumper. Cox’s layup at 1:47 gave Rowan a four point advantage (36-32). Montclair State scored the final seven points for a 39-36 lead at the intermission. Goldson registered six points and Singleton had one. Goldson finished the period with 14 points and seven rebounds. Rosenberg and White each had eight points for the Profs.
Rowan hosts Immaculata University in a nonconference game on Monday, November 26 at 7 p.m.
