Men's Basketball Defeats Host Gettysburg College In Championship Game

GETTYSBURG, PA – The Rowan University men’s basketball team won 71-47 over Gettysburg College in the championship of the Gettysburg Tip-Off Tournament on Saturday. 

On Friday night, Rowan defeated Kenyon College, 80-71 in the first round.  The Profs are 2-0 on the season.  Guard Jason Rosenberg (jr. Wayne, NJ/Wayne Valley) was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player while guard Rich McNamara (jr. Southampton, NJ/Seneca) and forward Brendan Cox (sr. Lindenwold, NJ/Highland Reg.) were chosen to the All-Tournament Team.  

The Bullets have a 1-1 record.  Gettysburg won 60-39 over Keuka College in the first round.  In the consolation, Kenyon had a 73-62 victory against Keuka. 

Five players scored in double figures for Rowan.  McNamara totaled 14 points and eight rebounds.  Cox contributed with 12 points while center Dee Benson (sr. Somerdale, NJ/Sterling), forward Matt Whitworth (jr. Ocean City, NJ/Ocean City) and Rosenberg all chipped in with 11 points apiece.  Rosenberg recorded 10 assists. 

For the Bullets, forward Alex Zurn collected 12 points and five rebounds.  Guard Sango Amolo came off the bench for 10 points.  Center Christian Bors produced six points and six boards.

In the first half, Rowan was ahead by seven points (14-7) at 13:57 after a three-pointer by McNamara.  Amolo hit two foul shots (12:33) and Gettysburg was down by four (16-12).  The Profs scored 13 straight points for a 17-point advantage (29-12) with 8:10 remaining.  McNamara registered seven points while guard Kendall White (sr. Lumberton, NJ/Rancocas Valley Reg.) and Whitworth each nailed a three.  At 4:20, Gettysburg trailed 31-20 after two free throws from Bors.  Benson made back-to-back jumpers (2:35, 2:01) to lead by 15 (37-22).  The Bullets ended the period with five points and were down 37-27 at the break.  McNamara scored 12 points in the first half.

Cox’s layup at 17:26 in the second period gave Rowan a 14-point advantage (41-27).  At the 15- minute mark, the Profs were up 41-29 then they went on a 10-0 run that ended at 11:36.  Benson (14:27) and Whitworth (12:56) each had a three-pointer while Rosenberg (12:01) and Cox (11:36) both scored with a layup.  White’s three at 8:22 made the score 57-31.  The Profs’ biggest lead of the game was 29 points (65-36) with a layup by Benson with 2:40 left.   

In the home opener, Rowan hosts conference opponent Montclair State University on Tuesday, November 20 at 8 p.m.
