WAYNE, NJ – The Rowan University men’s soccer team won 1-0 over William Paterson University in the first round of the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Championship Tournament.
The fifth seeded Profs (11-7-2) will play the number one seed Montclair State University (17-1) in the semifinals. The Pioneers were the fourth seed in the NJAC tournament and they finished with an 8-9-1 record.
In the other first round game, the third seed Rutgers-Newark defeated the sixth seed Kean University, 1-0 in overtime. The second seed Rutgers-Camden (14-2-2) hosts Rutgers-Newark (14-7) in the semifinals. The conference tournament schedule will have to be revised because of the hurricane. Rowan University will be closed on Monday and Tuesday, October 29 and 30.
The winning goal came on a penalty kick at 41:18 by midfielder Ryan Gordon (sr. Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill W.). He has eight goals and five assists on the season. During the regular season, Rowan and William Paterson had a scoreless overtime tie in Glassboro.
The Pioneers totaled 19 shots while Rowan took 12. Goalkeeper Michael Fanz-Huster (sr. Waterford, NJ/Hammonton) made seven saves for his third solo shutout. For William Paterson, goalie Santiago Mesa (so. Paterson, NJ/Passaic County Tech) stopped four shots.
