EWING, NJ – The Rowan University men’s soccer team defeated The College of New Jersey, 4-2 in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) game on Wednesday night. It was the final game of the regular season for both teams.
The Profs improve to 10-7-2 overall and 4-4-1 in the conference. Rowan is the fifth seed in the NJAC Championship Tournament. The Profs play at fourth seeded William Paterson University in the first round on Saturday, October 27 at 1 p.m. The Lions finish the season with a 7-11 record and a 3-6 NJAC mark.
TCNJ took a 1-0 lead at 2:36 in the first period. Forward Ray Nelan (gr. Haddon Heights, NJ/Haddon Heights) knocked in a pass from midfielder Kevin McCartney (so. Old Bridge, NJ/St. Joseph’s). Midfielder Tyler Higgins’ (jr. Toms River, NJ/Toms River N.) goal at 19:31 gave the Lions a 2-0 advantage. At 30:02, back Jared Mangone (sr. Princeton Jct., NJ/West Windsor-Plainsboro N.) headed in a rebound off his own shot to bring the Profs within one (2-1). Forward Travis Cortes (fr. Scotch Plains, NJ/Scotch Plains-Fanwood) tied the game (2-2) with an unassisted goal at 36:37. He juked a defender and shot the ball into the top right corner of the net.
Rowan pulled ahead, 3-2 on Mangone’s second goal at 52:19 in the second half. He kicked a rebounded shot into the left corner. Forward Julian Berrios (sr. Lakewood, NJ/Calvary Academy) scored on a pass from Cortes at 60:50.
Rowan took 17 shots and TCNJ had 15. Profs’ goalkeeper Michael Fanz-Huster (sr. Waterford, NJ/Hammonton) made five saves. Lions’ goalkeeper Matt Fredrick (sr. Mount Laurel, NJ/Lenape) stopped two shots.
