Rowan Defeats Conference Opponent Ramapo, 78-72

GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University men’s basketball team defeated visiting Ramapo College, 78-72 in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) game on Saturday afternoon.
 
The Profs improve to 7-7 overall and 2-2 in the conference.  The Roadrunners have an 11-4 record with a 2-2 NJAC mark.
 
Rowan had four players that scored in double figures.  Guard Kendall White (jr. Lumberton, NJ/Rancocas Valley Reg.) totaled 18 points and guard Phil Jackson (so. Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape) followed with 17 off the bench.  Guard Jason Rosenberg (so. Wayne, NJ/Wayne Valley) contributed with 12 points and eight rebounds.  Center Dee Benson (so. Somerdale, NJ/Sterling) chipped in with 11 points, four boards and two blocked shots. 
 
For Ramapo, guard Garret Thiel (jr. Middletown, NJ/Middletown S.) collected 18 points and a game-high 15 rebounds.  Forward Stephon Treadwell (jr. Newark, NJ/Seton Hall Prep) and guard Will Sanborn (jr. Red Bank, NJ/Red Bank Reg.) registered 17 and 16 points respectively.  Treadwell also grabbed eight boards.  Forward Demetrius Boards (sr. Jersey City, NJ/Marist) had 11 points and five rebounds. 
 
The Profs started the second half with a two-point advantage (32-30).  Sanborn made a layup at 16:36 and the Roadrunners trailed 39-37.  Rowan recorded an 11-0 run to lead 50-37 with 13:08 remaining.  Rosenberg produced five points in the surge.  Treadwell’s basket at 11:06 pulled Ramapo within six points (52-46).  Guard Rich McNamara (so. Southampton, NJ/Seneca) had a layup (4:53) for a seven-point advantage (62-55).  Guard Jermaine Emanuel (jr. Englewood, NJ/Laney) followed with two baskets and the Roadrunners trailed by three (62-59) at 3:48.  Thiel’s layup and foul shot (2:48) cut the deficit to one (65-64). 
 
McNamara hit a three-pointer (2:28) that made the score 68-64.  Jackson put the Profs up by seven (72-65) with a three at 1:05.  Thiel nailed a three-pointer (0:39) and Ramapo was down by four (74-70).  Rowan had four straight free throws, two each by McNamara (0:33) and Benson (0:26) that sealed the win.  Thiel had the final basket with 15 seconds on the clock.  Jackson scored 13 points in the final period and Thiel also had 13.
 
In the first half, Benson’s layup at 15:01 gave Rowan a three-point lead (7-4).  Ramapo answered with an 8-0 surge to go ahead 12-7 at 12:12.  Treadwell contributed with four points while Thiel and Boards each added two.  Rosenberg’s two foul shots tied the score at 12 with 10:07 left.  Boards followed with a basket (9:32) and Thiel had a free throw (8:33) to take back the lead (15-12).

Rowan scored seven points to go ahead 19-15 at 6:25.  White produced five points and Jackson had two.  Emanuel’s layup knotted the score at 24 with 4:33 remaining.  There were three more ties before Jackson made two foul shots (0:15) to end the half with a two-point lead (32-30).  White was the scoring leader with 10 points in the first stanza.
 
Next week, Rowan plays at home against Vaughn College on Thursday, January 12 at 7 p.m.
