CAMDEN, NJ – The Rutgers-Camden men’s basketball team defeated Rowan University, 79-75 in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) game on Wednesday night.
The Scarlet Raptors are 3-15 and 1-7 in the conference. The Profs have an 8-11 record with a 2-6 NJAC mark. Rutgers-Camden had five players score in double figures. Guard Anthony Solano (sr. Garfield, NJ/Wood-Ridge) posted a team-high 17 points. Guard Woody Redding (so. Philadelphia, PA/Northeast Catholic) totaled 16 points, 11 assists, seven rebounds and three steals. Guard Kyle Bowman (so. Camden, NJ/Collingswood) and forward Mike Payne (so. Trenton, NJ/Conwell-Egan Catholic (PA)) added 13 and 12 points respectively. Payne also grabbed eight boards. Forward Josh Stevens (fr. Philadelphia, PA/Northeast Catholic) chipped in with 10 points.
For Rowan, guard Rich McNamara (so. Southampton, NJ/Seneca) registered a career best 32 points and pulled down 11 rebounds. Guard Phil Jackson (so. Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape) tallied 12 points and seven boards. Guard Kendall White (jr. Lumberton, NJ/Rancocas Valley Reg.) had 11 points off the bench. Guard Jason Rosenberg (so. Wayne, NJ/Wayne Valley) collected nine points and nine assists. Center Dee Benson (so. Somerdale, NJ/Sterling) contributed with seven rebounds.
Rutgers-Camden was ahead, 33-23 at halftime. Payne’s layup at 15:55 in the second period extended the lead to 15 (40-25). Rowan answered with eight straight points to pull within seven (40-33) at 14:23. McNamara scored six points and Jackson added two. Payne had two free throws (11:05) and Bowman hit a jumper (10:40) to make the score, 50-38. The Scarlet Raptors were up by 11 (55-44) following two foul shots by Stevens at 6:39. Jackson’s three-pointer at 6:32 cut the deficit to eight (55-47). McNamara had a three point play at 5:41 and Rowan trailed by seven (57-50). Solano made two free throws (4:38) and Redding sunk a three-pointer (4:06) for a 12 point advantage (62-50).
The Scarlet Raptors were ahead, 70-61 with 1:39 remaining. Forward Jason Sofman (so. West Milford, NJ/West Milford) and McNamara each converted two free throws at 1:25 and 1:04 respectively to bring the Profs within five (70-65). Guard James Coleman (jr. Woodbine, NJ/Cape May Tech) nailed two foul shots at the 58 second mark to push the lead to seven (72-65). Solano followed with two free throws (:47). Rosenberg’s three-pointer at the 37 second mark made it a six point game (74-68). Payne had a foul shot (:34) and McNamara sunk two free throws (:24). Redding’s two foul shots with 10 seconds remaining put Rutgers-Camden up by seven (79-72). Guard Fred Battee (jr. Westville, NJ/Deptford) nailed a three-pointer with five seconds on the clock to end the scoring. McNamara totaled 22 points and six rebounds in the second half. Redding compiled 15 points and five assists for the Scarlet Raptors.
Rutgers-Camden jumped out to an 8-2 lead at 17:21 in the first stanza. White’s three-pointer at 15:16 brought Rowan within three (8-5). Stevens answered with a layup at 14:20. White (13:24) and Sofman (12:53) both sunk a jumper to trail by one (10-9). McNamara’s layup at 9:30 tied the game at 15. Payne hit one of two free throws at 8:32 for a one point advantage (16-15). Payne followed with a basket (7:59). The Profs were down by two (18-16) after Jackson hit a foul shot at 6:38. Payne had layup (6:25) and Redding nailed a three-pointer (5:55) to go ahead by seven (23-16).
White recorded a three-pointer at 5:30 to cut the deficit to four (23-19). Rutgers-Camden was on top, 25-21 at 4:15 after McNamara made two foul shots. Bowman scored the next seven points. He hit two three-pointers (3:34, 2:29) and a free throw (2:54) to put the Scarlet Raptors ahead, 32-21. McNamara had a layup (1:00) and Redding converted one of two foul shots (:32) to make the score, 33-23 at the intermission. McNamara posted 10 points in the first half. Bowman recorded nine points, while Solano and Stevens had eight apiece.
Rowan hosts William Paterson University in a NJAC game on Saturday, January 28 at 3 p.m.
