GLASSBORO, NJ – The Richard Stockton men’s basketball team came from behind to defeat Rowan University, 63-54 in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) game on Wednesday night.
The Ospreys are 11-6 overall and 5-1 in the conference. Rowan has an 8-9 record with a 2-4 NJAC mark. Richard Stockton was led by forward Bill McDonough (jr. Spring Lake, NJ/St. Rose) with 21 points and 15 rebounds. Guard Ibn Moye (so. Toms River, NJ/Central Reg.) registered 13 points off the bench. Guard Darnell McCargo (jr. Woodlynne, NJ/Collingswood) posted 10 points and six boards. Forward DiAndre Brown (sr. Sicklerville, NJ/Camden County Tech) tallied nine points and seven rebounds. Guard Kevin Johnson (so. Paulsboro, NJ/Paulsboro) accumulated five steals.
For Rowan, guard Phil Jackson (so. Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape) collected a career-high 18 points. Guard Rich McNamara (so. Southampton, NJ/Seneca) totaled 13 points and five rebounds. Center Dee Benson (so. Somerdale, NJ/Sterling) recorded 12 points and seven boards. Forward Jason Sofman (so. West Milford, NJ/West Milford) pulled down six rebounds and guard Jason Rosenberg (so. Wayne, NJ/Wayne Valley) dished seven assists.
The Profs were ahead, 35-25 at the intermission. Rowan started the second stanza with a 7-1 surge to increase the lead to 16 (42-26) at 17:52. Jackson posted five points and Rosenberg had two. Benson’s layup at 13:26 made the score, 48-33. Richard Stockton went on an 8-0 run to cut the deficit to seven (48-41) with 9:57 remaining. McDonough scored four of the eight points. Guard Fred Battee (jr. Westville, NJ/Deptford) hit a jumper at 9:24 and the Profs were up, 50-41.
Moye’s three-pointers at 9:03 and 8:09 brought the Ospreys within three (50-47). Benson answered with a layup at 7:10 to make the score 52-47. Richard Stockton scored the next 16 points for a 63-52 advantage with 33 seconds left. Moye scored five points, McDonough and McCargo each had four, Johnson made a layup and guard Rich Suhr (so. Toms River, NJ/Toms River E.) sunk a free throw. Benson’s basket with 22 seconds on the clock ended the scoring. McDonough totaled 13 points and six boards in the period, while Moye had 11 points.
Rowan opened the game with a 13-3 run over the first 6:12. McNamara collected seven of the 13 points. Benson hit a jumper at 10:41 and the lead was 12 points (20-8). Richard Stockton had six consecutive points to pull within six (20-14). Moye (10:21), McCargo (8:52) and Suhr (7:53) all had one basket. The Profs were ahead, 21-14 after a foul shot by McNamara (6:35). Brown’s three-point play at 6:09 cut the deficit to four (21-17).
Rosenberg had a layup (4:32) and McNamara nailed a three-pointer (4:01) to make the advantage nine points (26-17). Johnson hit one of two free throws at 2:19 to come within eight (29-21). Jackson’s three-pointer at 2:09 made the score, 32-21. After a basket by Brown (1:34), Jackson hit another three (1:12). McDonough’s layup with 43 seconds remaining brought the Ospreys within 10 (35-25) at halftime. McNamara and Jackson both registered 11 points in the period. McDonough had eight points and nine boards for Richard Stockton.
Rowan travels to NJAC opponent Montclair State University on Saturday, January 21 at 1 p.m.
