Rowan Swim Teams Win at York College (PA)

YORK, PA – The Rowan University men’s and women’s swim teams won at York College (PA) on Monday evening.  The Prof men defeated the Spartans, 121-84 while the women had a 112-93 victory.

Both the Rowan men and women are undefeated with 4-0 records.  The York men are 10-4 overall and the women have a 6-8 record.

The Prof women came in first in the 200 medley (1:59.10) and 200 freestyle (1:44.34) relays.  The medley relay included Lindsey Raleigh (jr. Toms River, NJ/Toms River S.), Lauren Grajek (so. Freehold, NJ/Freehold Twp.), Abby Grasso (so. Toms River, NJ/Toms River E.) and Leanne Zaug (fr. Florham Park, NJ/Hanover Park).  Gigi Russo (fr. Rumson, NJ/Rumson-Fair Haven Reg.), Zaug, Kristy Hill (jr. Turnersville, NJ/Washington Twp.) and Christie Raleigh (jr. Toms River, NJ/Pine Crest School (FL)) were on the free relay.

The men also swept the relays.  The 200 medley relay won in 1:41.15 with Larry Dow (so. Alexandria, VA/T.C. Williams), Liam Tully (fr. Cedar Grove, NJ/St. Peter’s Prep), Elliot Ortiz (fr. Vineland, NJ/Vineland) and Pat Malone (so. Sewell, NJ/Gloucester Catholic).  The 200 freestyle relay had a time of 1:29.97.  Bill Malone (sr. Sewell, NJ/Gloucester Catholic), Troy Cervini (fr. Vineland, NJ/Vineland), Mitch Friedel (so. Mays Landing, NJ/Oakcrest) and Joe Licwinko (fr. Kenilworth, NJ/David Brearly) made up the free relay.

Allison Schneider (so. Cranford, NJ/Cranford) took first place in three individual events.  She won the 500 (5:31.54) and 1000 (11:08.46) freestyles and the 400 individual medley (4:52.23).  Christie Raleigh was the winner in the 50 (23.76) and 100 (52.73) freestyles.  Both of her times were school records.  She broke the 50 (24.16) and 100 (52.88) freestyle marks that were held by Christy Grozalis (March 1993).  Her time in the 50 free was better than the NCAA B cut of 23.97.  Russo had second places in the 100 (55.79) and 200 (2:00.52) freestyles.  

Grajek captured first (1:04.36) in the 100 backstroke and third (5:05.67) in the 400 individual medley.  Grasso was second (1:04.98) in the 100 butterfly and fourth (2:05.66) in the 200 freestyle.  Lindsey Raleigh had second places in the 100 backstroke (1:05.84) and 100 breaststroke (1:14.12).  Zaug came in third (26.82) in the 50 free.

For the men, Bill Malone, Pat Malone and Dow each won two individual events.  Bill Malone was the winner in the 200 (1:47.01) and 500 (5:04.75) freestyles.  Pat Malone’s first places were in the 400 individual medley (4:27.05) and the 100 free (49.07).  Dow finished first in the 100 backstroke (55.52) and 100 butterfly (53.55).  Chris Alaimo (fr. Bridgewater, NJ/Bridgewater-Raritan) was second (10:36.13) in the 1000 freestyle and fourth (1:00.50) in the 100 backstroke.  Tully had a second place (1:04.03) in the 100 breaststroke. 

Mike Demarest (so. Galloway, NJ/Absegami) took third in the 200 freestyle (1:52.13) and 100 backstroke (58.80).  In the 400 individual medley, Brad Hawkins (so. Millville, NJ/Cumberland Reg.) came in third (4:37.29) followed by Tyler Huizing (fr. Brick, NJ/Brick Twp.) fourth (4:41.78).  Huizing was also third (5:14.91) in the 500 freestyle.  Cervini finished third in the 50 (22.76) and 100 (50.20) freestyles.  

Next, Rowan hosts conference opponent Montclair State University on Saturday, January 21.  The diving starts at 1 p.m. followed by the swimming events at 1:30 p.m.
