GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University men’s soccer team blanked Berkeley College (NY), 4-0 in the opening round of the Rowan Invitational Tournament. It was the first game of the season for both teams.
On Saturday, Rowan plays Ithaca College at 7 p.m. Prior, Ramapo College meets Berkeley at 5 p.m. In the first round, Ramapo defeated Ithaca, 4-2.
Three of the Profs’ goals came in the first half. Midfielder Shane Kohler (fr. Flemington, NJ/Hunterdon Central Reg.) started the scoring at 7:43. He headed in a throw in by back Tony Verchio (sr. Glassboro, NJ/Washington Twp.). Forward Julian Berrios (jr. Lakewood, NJ/Calvary Academy) scored the second at 14:56 on a pass from Kohler. Midfielder Ryan Gordon (jr. Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill W.) had a shot that hit the post and midfielder Parker Oris (fr. Bayville, NJ/Central Reg.) knocked in the rebound (36:07).
With 47 seconds left, forward Christian Fountain (fr. Fredericksburg, VA/Stafford) registered the final goal. His shot deflected off Berkeley goalkeeper Camilo Montes. Forward Mike Pinter (fr. Green Pond, NJ/Morris Knolls) collected an assist.
Rowan totaled 22 shots while Berkeley had three. Goalkeeper Ryan Gill (so. West Deptford, NJ/West Deptford) was in the Profs’ net for the first half and goalie Michael Fanz-Huster (jr. Waterford, NJ/Hammonton) made one save in the second. Montes ended the game with five saves.
