Emory Tops Rowan, 5-3 On Second Day Of Sonny Carter Invitational

ATLANTA, GA – The Emory University men’s soccer team defeated Rowan University, 5-3 on the second day of the Sonny Carter Invitational on Sunday afternoon.

The Eagles are 1-3, while the Profs have a 2-2 record. In the first game on Sunday, Oglethorpe University had a 5-2 victory over Methodist University. On Saturday, Methodist beat Emory, 2-0 and Oglethorpe topped Rowan, 4-0.

Emory was led by back Andrew Natalino (jr. Marietta, GA/Walton) and midfielder/forward Andrew Jones (so. Arlington, VA/The Potomac School) with two goals apiece. Natalino also had one assist. Back Jeff Cochran (fr. Great Falls, VA/Langley) added one goal and two assists. Midfielder/forward Zach Rosenberg (fr. Plainsboro, NJ/West Windsor-Plainsboro S.) dished two assists, while midfielder Javier Puga (fr. Blue Bell, PA/Wissahickon) had one.

For Rowan, midfielder Shane Kohler (fr. Flemington, NJ/Hunterdon Central Reg.) and Nick Bolton (so. Dover, DE/Dover) and forward Julian Berrios (jr. Lakewood, NJ/Calvary Academy) all found the net once. Forward Cristhian Gonzalez (sr. Piscataway, NJ/Calasenz (Colombia)) picked up one assist.

Emory took 17 shots and Rowan had 11. Eagles’ goalkeeper Aram Keteyian (jr. Oxford, MI/Lake Orion) made one save in the first half. Goalkeeper Alex Wong (jr. San Francisco, CA/Marin Academy) was in the net for the second period. Profs’ goalkeeper Ryan Gill (so. West Deptford, NJ/West Deptford) turned away three shots in 55:27. Goalkeeper Michael Fanz-Huster (jr. Waterford, NJ/Hammonton) made one save in the final 34:33.

Jones gave Emory a 1-0 lead at 11:18 in the first half. Rosenberg stole a pass and kicked the ball to the middle of the field where Jones put it in the net. At 16:47, Bolton recorded an unassisted goal to tie the game (1-1). Kohler headed in a cross from Gonzalez at 21:25. Berrios added a goal at 22:37 to give the Profs a 3-1 halftime advantage.

Natalino scored off a pass from Puga at 46:46 in the second period to bring the Eagles within one (3-2). At 50:18, Cochran threw the ball in and Natalino headed it into the goal. Cochran’s goal came 1:47 later. He scored on a header off a corner kick by Natalino. Jones added an insurance goal at 59:58. Rosenberg and Cochran each had an assist on the play.

Mark Lavery from Oglethorpe was named the Most Valuable Player of the tournament. The All-Tournament Team was comprised of Jakub Madej, Aaron Walker, Ben Robertson, Frank Peterson and Lavery from Oglethorpe; Eric McGinnis, Pat VanCura, Shane Davis and Kyle Beach from Methodist; Natalino and Jones from Emory and Kohler from Rowan.

Rowan opens its conference schedule at home against Montclair State University on Wednesday, September 14 at 7 p.m.
