SALISBURY, MD – The Rowan University softball team defeated Shenandoah University, 8-1 on the fourth day of the NCAA Regional Tournament. The regional is being held at Salisbury University.
Rowan (31-12), the second seed, faces the third seed Salisbury University (35-5) in the second game on Sunday. Shenandoah, the seventh seed, ends the year with a 32-17 record. In the first regional game, Shenandoah had a 4-1 win over Rowan.
Right-hander Jamie Minix (jr. Clarksboro, NJ/Kingsway Reg.) went six innings for the victory. Minix (15-6) allowed six hits and one earned run. Righty Erika Knorr (sr. Monroeville, NJ/Delsea Reg.) threw the final inning and did not give up a hit. Pitcher Brooke Over (jr. Roaring Spring, PA/Northern Bedford) suffered the loss. Over (23-9) went 3.1 innings. She gave up five earned runs on four hits.
Profs’ first baseman Stephanie Labas (so. Millville, NJ/Millville) was two for four with three RBIs and one run scored. Designated player Ashley Landi (sr. Vineland, NJ/Vineland) contributed with a double (three at bats), two RBIs and one run scored. Catcher Sam Stevens (so. Egg Harbor Twp., NJ/Egg Harbor Twp.) added a home run and two RBIs. Second baseman Nicole Escudero (so. Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) chipped in with two hits in two trips to the plate and one run scored.
Center fielder Nicolina Veneziano (jr. Bloomfield, NJ/Bloomfield) registered two hits (four at bats), a double and two runs scored. Shortstop Ashley Minch (jr. Pennsville, NJ/Pennsville Mem.) produced one hit (four at bats), one RBI and one run scored. Right fielder Lauren Davis (jr. Ewing, NJ/Ewing) had one hit and left fielder Casey Roselle (sr. Sparta, NJ/Sparta) scored one run.
For the Hornets, first baseman Lauren McCabe (so. Bluemont, VA/Clarke County) was two for two with a triple and one run scored. Second baseman Jolisa Jones (sr. Farmville, VA/Cumbertland) contributed with one hit (four at bats) and one RBI. Center fielder Renoula Jones (sr. Queenstown, MD/Kent Island) and shortstop Heather Sink (fr. Chesterfield, VA/Cosby) each had one hit while left fielder Morgan Coble (fr. Philipsburg, PA/Philipsburg-Osceola) recorded a double.
Rowan went up 3-0 in the top of the first inning. Roselle led off with a walk and Veneziano followed with a single. Minch drove in Roselle with a hit through the left side. Veneziano went to third and Minch advanced to second on the throw. Labas’ single up the middle, scored Veneziano and Minch. Shenandoah got on the scoreboard with one run in the third. McCabe had a lead-off triple and came home on Jolisa Jones’ single.
The Profs led 5-1 after two runs in the fourth inning. Landi walked and crossed the plated on Stevens’ homer to left field. Rowan tacked on three more runs in the fifth. Veneziano led off with a double down the right field line and she crossed the plate on a single to left field by Labas. Labas went to second on an error. Escudero had a single to left field then both runners advanced a base due to an error. Landi knocked in Labas and Escudero with a double to right field.
The national softball tournament is double elimination. The regional winner advances to the national championship that is scheduled for Friday-Tuesday, May 20-24 at the Moyer Complex in Salem, VA. The results and schedule for the Salisbury regional are below.
