Rowan Falls to Shenandoah, 4-1 in First Game of NCAA Regional Tournament

SALISBURY, MD – The Rowan University softball team lost to Shenandoah University, 4-1 in the first round of the NCAA Regional Tournament. The regional is being held, Thursday-Monday, May 12-16 at Salisbury University.

Rowan (28-12), the second seed, will play the sixth seed Farmingdale State College (32-6) on Friday at noon. The seventh seed Shenandoah (31-15) meets the third seed Salisbury University (34-4) at 4 p.m. In the first game on Friday, the eighth seed Kean University (16-26) faces number four Virginia Wesleyan College (29-10) at 10 a.m. The 2 p.m. game features the top seed Emory University (41-2-1) against the fifth seed Christopher Newport University (32-10).

In the other first round games, Emory defeated Kean, 6-1 and Christopher Newport had an 8-6 victory over Virginia Wesleyan. Salisbury recorded a 4-0 shutout against Farmingdale State. The national softball tournament is double elimination. The regional winner advances to the national championship that is scheduled for Friday-Tuesday, May 20-24 at the Moyer Complex in Salem, VA.

Right-hander Brooke Over (jr. Roaring Spring, PA/Northern Bedford) threw a complete game for the win on the mound. Over (22-7) scattered eight hits and gave up one earned run. She struck out five batters. Righty Jamie Minix (jr. Clarksboro, NJ/Kingsway Reg.) took the loss. Minix (12-6) went 6.1 innings, allowing five hits and four runs, one was earned.

Second baseman Jolisa Jones (sr. Farmville, VA/Cumberland) led the Hornets with two hits (four at bats), two RBIs and a home run. Left fielder Morgan Coble (fr. Philipsburg, PA/Philipsburg-Osceola) was two for three at the plate with two runs scored. Center fielder Renoula Jones (sr. Queenstown, MD/Kent Island) and designated player Jordan Wolford (so. Bluemont, VA/Clarke County) each contributed with one hit while pinch runner Brittany Guepe (fr. Manassa, VA/Osbourn Park) scored one run.

For the Profs, second baseman Jenny Arcella (fr. Hillsdale, NJ/Pascack Valley) registered two hits in three at bats and one RBI. Left fielder Casey Roselle (sr. Sparta, NJ/Sparta) and shortstop Ashley Minch (jr. Pennsville, NJ/Pennsville Mem.) produced two hits (four at bats) apiece. First baseman Stephanie Labas (so. Millville, NJ/Millville) and designated player Ashley Landi (sr. Vineland, NJ/Vineland) both had one hit. Pinch runner Nicole Escudero (so. Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) scored one run.

After four scoreless innings, Shenandoah got on the scoreboard first with one run in the top of the fifth. Coble led off with a single and advanced to second on an error. Catcher Denise Mitchell (so. Ellicott City, MD/Marriotts Ridge) reached first on a sac bunt attempt with an error, scoring Coble. The Hornets went up 2-0 in the sixth inning. Jolisa Jones recorded a solo homer with the first at bat of the inning. It was her fifth home run on the season. In the bottom half, Rowan scored one run to trail, 2-1. Labas had a lead-off single and was replaced at first base by Escudero. Landi moved Escudero to second with a single through the left side. Arcella’s hit up the middle brought Escudero home.

Shenandoah added two more runs in the seventh inning. Coble singled to start the inning. She advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Mitchell. Wolford’s hit moved Coble to third. Guepe came into the game to run for Wolford. A ground out moved Guepe to second base. Right fielder Catherine Pruiett (sr. Clifton, VA/Centreville) got to base because of an error and Coble crossed the plate. Jolisa Jones plated Guepe with a single.

There are 60 teams that are competing in the NCAA Division III Softball Championship Tournament. There are two six team regional sites and six eight team regional sites. Forty-one conferences received automatic bids (Pool A) and two independents were selected for the championship from Pool B. The 17 remaining schools were selected on an at-large basis from the automatic qualifying conferences and the remaining independent institutions.
