Rowan Defeats Goucher, 13-6 In Season Opener

GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University women’s lacrosse team opened the season with a 13-6 win over Goucher College on Wednesday. The Profs outscored the Gophers, 8-1 in the second period after the score was tied at five.

Midfielder Alli Dickey (sr. Stevensville, MD/Kent Island) contributed with two goals and two assists. Midfielders Trish Harrington (sr. Mahwah, NJ/Suffern (NY)) and Michelle Lubrano (jr. Delanco, NJ/Holy Cross) and defender Nicole Valianti (sr. Oaklyn, NJ/Collingswood) each scored twice. Attacks Vicky Sucharski (fr. Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson) and Leah Hershey (sr. Glen Rock, PA/Susquehannock) added two goals apiece while attack Marissa Micciche (fr. Kinnelon, NJ/Kinnelon) had one.

For Goucher (1-2), Hannah Khin (so. Portsmouth, NH/Portsmouth) totaled three goals and one assist. Midfielder Colleen Cole (sr. Holliston, MA/Northfield Mt. Hermon School) collected two goals. Defender Sara Miller (sr. Baldwin, MD/Dulaney) had one goal while attack Becca Smith (jr. Leesburg, VA/Heritage) assisted on one.

Rowan took 33 shots and Goucher had 21. In the Profs’ net, goalies Kerry Pehnke (jr. West Windsor, NJ/West Windsor-Plainsboro N.) and Lindsay Barrie (fr. Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) each played a half. Pehnke stopped three shots in the first while Barrie made nine saves in the second. Gophers’ goalie Ashley Shaner (so. Pottstown, PA/Pottsgrove) turned away 13 shots.

With 4:35 left in the first half, Rowan was ahead 5-3 after a goal by Valianti. Khin cut the deficit to one at 28:43 and Miller tied the game with a goal as time expired to end the half. Dickey put the Profs up 6-5 at 1:36 into the second stanza and 10 minutes later Khin made the score six all. Rowan then recorded seven unanswered goals. Harrington (44:01) and Dickey (49:00) both scored on free positions. Sucharski registered her first collegiate goal at 49:36. Hershey tallied two straight goals at 49:50 and 56:43. Dickey assisted on Hershey’s first goal. Valianti scored her second goal unassisted at 57:36. With 42 seconds left, Sucharski hit the net with a pass from Dickey.

Rowan started the game with two straight goals. Micciche had the first at 5:27 followed by Harrington on a free position (9:34). Cole tied the score at two with unassisted goals at 11:10 and 15:33. Lubrano made the score 4-2 (17:59) with two goals and Khin followed with one (24:30). The Profs’ last goal of the period was by Valianti at 25:25 for a two point advantage.

Rowan travels to Maryland on Saturday, March 5 to play Washington College at 3 p.m.
