GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University men’s basketball team lost at home to Rutgers-Camden, 84-75 in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) game on Wednesday night.
The Scarlet Raptors had four players that scored in double figures. Guard Woody Redding (fr. Philadelphia, PA/Northeast Catholic) led the way with 23 points. Guard Eric Goode (sr. Newark, NJ/University) came off the bench for 15 points. Guard Anthony Solano (jr. Garfield, NJ/Wood-Ridge) contributed with 13 points while forward Kevin Brown (sr. Port Norris, NJ/Millville) added 11.
Rutgers-Camden has a 6-16 record with a 4-8 conference mark. Rowan is 10-12 overall and 4-7 in the NJAC. For the Profs, guard Akeem Johnson (jr. Gouldtown, NJ/Bridgeton) totaled 17 points and guard Sean Hughes (sr. Pt. Pleasant, NJ/Pt. Pleasant Boro) followed with 16. Guards Kendall White (so. Lumberton, NJ/Rancocas Valley Reg.) and Laud Anderson (sr. North Brunswick, NJ/North Brunswick) compiled 12 points apiece. Guard Jason Rosenberg (fr. Wayne, NJ/Wayne Valley) collected a career-high eight rebounds and dished seven assists.
With 3:13 left in the game, Johnson made two foul shots that put the Profs up by one (71-70). Brown’s layup at 2:55 made the score 72-71 in favor of the Scarlet Raptors. Anderson hit a jumper to retake the lead 73-72 with 2:23 on the clock. Rutgers-Camden pulled away with a 10-0 run for a nine point advantage (82-73) at the 25 second mark. Redding scored five points, Brown chipped in with three and Solano had two. Hughes made the Profs’ last basket (0:16) and Goode had the final two points (0:13) of the contest. Redding and Anderson each compiled 12 points in the second period.
The second half started with Rutgers-Camden ahead 46-43. Whites’ layup at 18:11 gave the Profs the lead, 47-46. The Scarlet Raptors followed with two baskets to go up by three (50-47) at 15:36. Anderson had a layup (12:15) and Rowan trailed by one (56-55). Forward Teon Russell (fr. Camden, NJ/Woodrow Wilson) made a basket (11:58) and Goode nailed a three (11:25) to go ahead by six points (61-55). The score was tied three more times before Johnson’s free throws at 3:13.
Rutgers-Camden jumped out to a 13 point lead (23-10) in 7:33 of the first stanza. Solano hit three three-pointers for nine of the 23 points and Redding contributed with five. Rowan answered with a 7-0 run to pull within six points (23-17) at 10:56. White’s layup at 9:16 cut the deficit to four points (25-21). Redding’s basket at 6:04 made the score 36-27. The Profs were down by two (42-40) after a three-pointer by Hughes (1:46) and a free throw by Rosenberg (1:15). Brown had a layup for a four point advantage (44-40) with 47 seconds left. Hughes made a three-point basket (0:35) for a one point deficit (44-43) and Goode’s jumper as time expired ended the half (46-43). Redding and Solano each tallied 11 points and Hughes registered 12.
Rowan hosts Richard Stockton College on Saturday, February 12 at 3 p.m. in the final home game of the regular season. Rutgers-Camden is at home on Saturday against Kean University at 3 p.m.in its last conference game.
