NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ – The Rowan University men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams competed on the final day of the Metropolitan Championships on Sunday. The women finished third among 19 teams, while the men took fourth out of 18 schools. The three-day meet was held at Rutgers University.
The women totaled 915 points and the men had 718.5. Rowan captured fourth in the women’s 400 freestyle relay with a time of 3:39.56. Kate Winters (sr. Princeton Jct., NJ/West Windsor-Plainsboro S.), Stacey Rahter (sr. Somers Point, NJ/Mainland Reg.), Sam King (sr. Marmora, NJ/Ocean City) and Teresa Stearns (so. Absecon, NJ/Holy Spirit) made up the relay.
Anne O’Gorman (sr. Boonton, NJ/Academy of St. Elizabeth) came in fifth in the 200 butterfly (2:10.57). She broke the University mark (2:11.40) held by Jen Hodgins (1995). Rahter had a seventh place in the 200 breaststroke (2:27.26). She recorded a NCAA B cut (2:24.86) in the preliminaries with 2:24.78. Allison Schneider (fr. Cranford, NJ/Cranford) took sixth place (18:08.01) in the 1650 freestyle, while Adrienne Bush (fr. Silver Spring, MD/James Hubert Blake) was eighth (18:24.76). Winters placed ninth overall and won the consolation final in the 200 backstroke (2:06.63). Her time was better than the NCAA B cut of 2:07.59. Winters also broke her own school record (2:08.12), which she set in 2010.
Samantha Rottkamp (jr. Bridgeton, NJ/Cumberland Reg.) had a third place in the women’s one meter diving with 426.65 points. Kylie O’Rourke (so. N. Cape May, NJ/Lower Cape May Reg.) followed in sixth (344.15 points). In the men’s three meter diving, Mark Balesteri (sr. Egg Harbor Twp., NJ/Egg Harbor Twp.) and Kyle Bianchini (sr. Blackwood, NJ/Highland Reg.) were second (503.85 points) and fifth (402.05 points) respectively.
The men’s 400 freestyle relay of Bill Malone (jr. Sewell, NJ/Gloucester Catholic), Tim Dimond (so. Allentown, PA/Emmaus), Jerry Capriotti (fr. Vineland, NJ/Vineland) and Kevin Sheridan (jr. E. Brunswick, NJ/E. Brunswick) finished third in 3:09.01. In the 200 backstroke, Dimond captured fifth place with a time of 1:55.34. Brian McDermott (sr. Bergenfield, NJ/Bergen Catholic) won the consolation final for ninth overall in 1:59.33.
