GLASSBORO, NJ – The Richard Stockton College men’s basketball team had an 86-72 victory over Rowan University in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) game on Saturday.
The Ospreys improve to 16-8 overall and 8-4 in the conference. The Profs have a 10-13 record with a 4-8 NJAC mark. Guard Kai Massaquoi (sr. Lawnside, NJ/Haddon Heights) totaled 26 points, nine rebounds, six assists and three steals. Forward Nnamdi Usuwa (so. Colonia, NJ/Colonia) followed with 19 points and six boards. Forward DiAndre Brown (jr. Sicklerville, NJ/Camden County Tech) scored 14 points.
For Rowan, guard Sean Hughes (sr. Pt. Pleasant, NJ/Pt. Pleasant Boro) registered 19 points. Guard Akeem Johnson (jr. Gouldtown, NJ/Bridgeton) tallied 10 points and three steals. Guard Laud Anderson (sr. North Brunswick, NJ/North Brunswick Twp.) added 10 points off the bench. Guard Kendall White (so. Lumberton, NJ/Rancocas Valley Reg.) chipped in with eight points.
The Profs led 39-33 at halftime. Hughes’ layup at 18:30 in the second period made the score, 43-35. The Ospreys scored six straight points to pull within two (43-41) at 17:03. Johnson nailed a three-pointer at 15:58 to push the advantage to five (49-44). Rowan was up, 52-48 following a layup and a free throw by forward Tim Matchett (sr. Pitman, NJ/Pitman). The score was 54-50 after a basket by Anderson at 13:49.
Richard Stockton guard Dave Williams (so. Pennsauken, NJ/Pennsauken) had a layup at 13:11 that tied the game at 54. After two free throws by guard Roger Loatman (jr. Bridgeton, NJ/Bridgeton) (12:43), Usuwa had a layup (12:13) and the score was tied at 56. The Ospreys went on a 15-0 run to take a 71-56 lead with 7:46 on the clock. Massaquoi led the way with four points. Loatman’s layup at 4:34 cut the deficit to 10 (73-63). A basket by Massaquoi (3:53) and a three-pointer by forward Mike Pendleton (so. Pennsauken, NJ/Pennsauken) extended the advantage to 15 (78-63). Richard Stockton’s largest lead was 18 points at 1:11 (84-66) and :38 (86-68). Hughes hit two foul shots (:33) and Anderson had a dunk at the buzzer to end the scoring. Massaquoi collected 18 points in the second half.
Rowan started the game with an 8-2 surge over the first 2:41. Hughes had six points, while White added two. Usuwa’s layup at 15:40 brought the Ospreys within one (8-7). Richard Stockton trailed by three (21-18) after a basket by Matchett at 11:02. Guard Ibn Moye (fr. Toms River, NJ/Central Reg.) hit a three-pointer to tie the game at 21 with 10:33 on the clock. After a jumper by Matchett (10:01), the Ospreys scored six consecutive points for a four point lead (27-23) at 7:52. Massaquoi had four of the six points.
Rowan went up by two (29-27) following a layup by White (7:20), a three-pointer by guard Rich McNamara (fr. Southampton, NJ/Seneca) (6:04) and a foul shot by Anderson (5:45). Massaquoi’s layup at 4:59 tied the game (29-29). The Profs closed out the period with a 10-4 run for a 39-33 lead at the break. Anderson and Johnson each had four points in the stretch.
Rowan travels to Lancaster Bible College for a nonconference game on Monday, February 14 at 6 p.m.
