Widener Defeats Berkeley, 95-82 in First Game of Heritage's Dairy Stores Classic

GLASSBORO, NJ – The Widener University men’s basketball team defeated Berkeley College, 95-82 in the first round of the Heritage’s Dairy Stores Classic on Friday night.  The tournament is being held at Rowan University.

On Saturday, Widener (6-2) will meet the winner of the Penn State Brandywine/Rowan first round game in the championship at 3 p.m.  Prior, Berkeley (1-7) plays in the consolation game at 1 p.m.

Center Jack Brennan led the Pride with game-highs of  26 points and 11 rebounds.  Guard Lamar Jackson contributed with 19 points.  Forward Bob Makor chipped in with 14 points and forward Perry Wright added 11.  Jackson also dished seven assists.

For Berkeley, forward Daniel Waynick scored 19 points and grabbed nine boards.  Guards Devante Chang and Andrew Webber collected 16 and 15 points respectively.  Chang also produced six rebounds and four assists.  Guard Gary Williams registered 13 points and guard Davonn Boyd followed with 10. 

In the second half, Widener had two consecutive baskets by Brennan to lead 47-41 at 18:29.  Boyd’s jumper at 16:47 pulled Berkeley within two (47-45).  Makor’s layup stretched the advantage to seven points (58-51) with 13:32 on the clock.  Widener was ahead 61-51 (13:32) after three foul shots.  Waynick pulled the Knights within six (61-55) after a layup at 11:42.  The Pride followed with two free throws from Makor (11:32) and guard Brian Smith (10:56).  Jackson’s basket increased the lead to 12 points (67-55) at 10:29. 

Berkeley trailed by five (77-72) at 4:30 after a layup by Waynick.  With 1:38 left, Widener was ahead 85-78.  The Pride sealed the win with a 7-0 surge.  Makor had two free throws (1:33) and Brennan made five foul shots (one at 1:08, two at 1:05 and two at 0:58) for a 14-point advantage (92-78).  He led all scorers in the final period with 20 points.  

Widener started the game with 13 straight points in 3:24.  Brennan scored six points in the run.  Jackson’s three-pointer at 14:28 made the score 16-4.  Berkeley followed with three foul shots, one by Waynick (14:10) and two from Williams (13:44) to trail by nine points (16-7).  The Pride led by 11 points (23-12) with 11:23 remaining.  The Knights answered with an 11-0 surge that tied the score at 23 (8:42).  Webber contributed with six points while Chang added four and Williams made a foul shot.

There were three more ties before Widener took the lead for the remainder of the period.  Jackson knotted the score at 31 (5:26) with a layup.  The Pride built an eight-point advantage (39-31) with 2:53 left.  Guard Adam Rodomicki ended the surge with a three-pointer. 

Chang converted two free throws at 2:48 to cut the deficit to six (39-33).  Waynick (1:33) and Wright (1:08) exchanged baskets.  At the 53-second mark, Waynick had a layup and the Knights were down 41-37.  Wright had a basket (0:19) for a six-point lead (43-37).  Waynick scored the last two points of the period with a layup at the seven-second mark.  Widener was up 43-39 at the intermission.  Chang totaled 12 first half points and Webber had 11.  Jackson led the Pride with 10 points.
