Rowan Tops Penn State Brandywine, 89-64 On First Day Of Heritage's Dairy Stores Classic

GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University men’s basketball team defeated Penn State Brandywine, 89-64 on the first day of the Heritage’s Dairy Stores Classic on Friday night.

Earlier, Widener University had a 95-82 victory over Berkeley College.  On Saturday, December 10, Rowan plays Widener in the championship at 3 p.m.  Prior, Penn State Brandywine faces Berkeley in the consolation game at 1 p.m.

Rowan (4-4) was led by center Dee Benson (so. Somerdale, NJ/Sterling) with a season-high 22 points and 11 rebounds.  Guard Rich McNamara (so. Southampton, NJ/Seneca) tallied 21 points and seven boards.  Guard Kendall White (jr. Lumberton, NJ/Rancocas Valley Reg.) registered 18 points and six rebounds.  Forward Jason Sofman (so. West Milford, NJ/West Milford) added seven points.  Guard Matt Rosengrant (so. Toms River, NJ/Toms River E.) dished seven assists and had three steals.

For Penn State Brandywine (2-7), guard Rasheed Wilkins (so. New Media Tech. Charter) compiled 17 points and five assists.  Forward Mike McGlynn (jr. West Chester Rustin) totaled 11 points and six rebounds.  Guard Vince Mostardi (so. Archbishop Carroll) chipped in with eight points, while guard Sean Mulkeen (jr. Springfield) had seven.

Rowan was ahead, 5-4 after Mulkeen’s layup at 17:40 in the first period.  Benson had a basket (17:23) and White nailed a three-pointer (16:43) to give the Profs at six point advantage (10-4).  Forward Brandon Jacquette (so. Penncrest) hit a jumper at 13:48 to bring the Lions within four (14-10).  Rowan scored eight straight points to lead 22-10 at 11:56.  McNamara recorded two three-pointers and White had a basket.  The Profs were up by 14 (40-26) with 2:21 on the clock following a layup by White.  McGlynn’s three-pointer at 2:07 cut the deficit to 11 (40-29) at the intermission.  McNamara and White both collected 13 points in the period.

In the second half, Rowan had a 13 point advantage (46-33) at 17:41.  The Lions had an 8-2 run to come within seven (48-41) at 15:59.  Wilkins had five of the eight points.  Guard Jason Rosenberg (so. Wayne, NJ/Wayne Valley) sunk two foul shots (15:46) and McNamara hit a jumper (15:20) to extend the lead to 11 (52-41).  Wilkins converted two free throws at 11:40 and Penn State Brandywine trailed by 12 (59-47).  Rowan had a 10-4 surge to pull away (69-51) with 9:56 left to play.  Benson registered seven of the 10 points.  The Profs’ largest lead of 27 points came at 4:34 (81-54) and :39 (89-62).
