SWARTHMORE, PA – The Rowan University men’s swim team won the Swarthmore College Invitational.  The two-day invitational ended with two sessions on Saturday.

The Profs compiled 1,038 points.  Ursinus College was second with 632.5 points followed by Swarthmore with 472.5.  The two-day meet consisted of nine teams.

In the morning, Rowan won the 200 medley (1:34.04) and 800 freestyle (6:59.09) relays.  The Profs broke the 800 freestyle relay record of 6:59.73 that was hled by Mike Wilkinson, Jason Craig, Ayinde Mitchell and Eric Dinsmore (March 1999).  The medley relay included Larry Dow (so. Alexandria, VA/T.C. Williams), Dan Bower (sr. Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.), Max Tyburski (jr. Burke, VA/Lake Braddock Secondary) and Bill Malone (sr. Sewell, NJ/Gloucester Catholic).  Tyburski, Malone, Dow and Tim Dimond (jr. Allentown, PA/Emmaus) were on the free relay. 

Tyburski swam to a first place in the 100 butterfly with a time of 50.27.  His time was better than the NCAA B cut of 50.67.  Dow also had a NCAA B cut (51.83) and school record in the 100 backstroke with a winning time of 51.03.  The old mark was 52.00 by Seumas Quinn (February 2005).  Malone was the winner with a school record of 1:42.52 in the 200 freestyle followed by Dimond second (1:46.54).  Last year, Malone set the mark of 1:42.55 (December 2010).  Bower came in first (59.00) in the 100 breaststroke.

Tyler Huizing (fr. Brick, NJ/Brick Twp.) finished second (4:24.59) in the 400 individual medley and Brad Hawkins (so. Millville, NJ/Millville) was fifth (4:33.21).  Hawkins also had a fifth place (57.35) in the 100 backstroke.  Liam Tully (fr. Cedar Grove, NJ/St. Peter’s Prep) took third (1:02.85) in the 100 breaststroke and Luke Minka (fr. Wilmington, DE/Vista (CA)) was fifth (1:02.96).  In the 100 butterfly, Chris Cannizzaro (fr. Cedar Grove, NJ/St. Peter’s Prep) and Ryan Hennessy (so. Rutherford, NJ/Rutherford) were fourth (54.60) and fifth (54.80) respectively.  Troy Cervini (fr. Vineland, NJ/Vineland) had a fourth place (1:48.70) in the 200 free.

In the evening, the Profs took first (3:16.39) in the 400 freestyle relay with Cervini, Mitch Friedel (so. Mays Landing, NJ/Oakcrest), Bower and Dimond.  Bower swam a winning time of 2:12.75 in the 200 breaststroke and Tully was second (2:12.76).  Malone won the 100 free in 46.09 followed by Dow and Tyburski who were second (46.23) and third (46.46) respectively.  Dimond had a first place (2:00.27) in the 200 backstroke and he was second (2:02.04) in the 200 butterfly.

Gary Hessler (fr. Palmyra, NJ/Palmyra) took third (17:18.51) in the 1650 freestyle.  Cannizzaro came in third (2:02.22) in the 200 butterfly while Hennessy and Chris Alaimo (fr. Bridgewater, NJ/Bridgewater-Raritan) were fifth (2:08.01) and seventh (2:10.15) respectively.  Minka finished fourth (2:18.75) in the 200 breaststroke and Mike Demarest (so. Galloway, NJ/Absegami) was fourth (2:03.58) in the 200 backstroke.  Cervini had a fifth place (48.95) in the 100 free.
