Susquehanna Tops Rowan, 77-65

GLASSBORO, NJ – The Susquehanna University men’s basketball team had a 77-65 victory over Rowan University in a nonconference game on Saturday.

The Crusader have a 5-4 record, while the Profs are 4-7.  Susquehanna was led by center Harley Sellinger (so. Mill Hall, PA/Central Mountain) with 25 points and 12 rebounds.  Guard Spenser Spencer (sr. Seattle, WA/Lakeside) added 17 points.  Forward J.T. Wilson (jr. Sparta, NJ/Pope John XXIII Reg.) chipped in with 16 points, six rebounds and three steals.

For Rowan, guard Rich McNamara (so. Southampton, NJ/Seneca) registered 18 points.  Guard Kendall White (jr. Lumberton, NJ/Rancocas Valley Reg.) compiled 14 points and six boards.  Guard Phil Jackson (so. Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape) contributed with 10 points and five rebounds off the bench.  Guard Jason Rosenberg (so. Wayne, NJ/Wayne Valley) dished nine assists.

Susquehanna was ahead, 31-30 at halftime.  The Crusaders opened the second period with 10 straight points for a 41-30 advantage (17:23).  Wilson tallied five of the 10 points.  Sellinger’s layup made the score, 43-33 at 16:44.  Rowan recorded the next six points to come within four (43-39) at 14:38.  Center Dee Benson (so. Somerdale, NJ/Sterling) had a layup and McNamara hit four foul shots.  Sellinger had a three point play at 13:20 to extend the lead to seven (48-41).  Rowan went on an 8-0 run to go up, 49-48 with 10:53 on the clock.  White collected six points and Benson had two.  Sellinger made a jumper at 10:24 to put Susquehanna back on top, 50-49. 

Rosenberg sunk one of two free throws at 9:52 to tie the game at 50.  A layup by Sellinger (9:42) and a three-pointer by guard E.J. Duncan (jr. East Stroudsburg, PA/Pope John XXIII Reg.) (8:59) gave the Crusaders a five point lead (55-50).  Wilson’s jump shot at 8:02 made the score, 59-52.  The Profs had a 6-2 surge to cut the deficit to three (61-58) at 5:50.  Jackson posted five of the six points.  Spencer nailed a three-pointer at 3:47 to give Susquehanna a three point advantage (66-60).  White’s foul shot at 2:35 made the score, 68-62.  Jackson registered a layup (2:32) to bring Rowan within four (68-64).  Spencer answered with a three (2:01) and Benson followed with a free throw (1:44).  The Crusaders closed out the game with six consecutive foul shots.  Guard Mike Perillo (so. Holmdel, NJ/Holmdel) made two (1:42) and Spencer hit two at 1:01 and :29.  Sellinger compiled 15 points in the second half.  Spencer had 12 points followed by Wilson with 11.  McNamara scored 10 for Rowan.

Susquehanna had a one point advantage (4-3) at 17:40 in the first stanza.  Back-to-back layups by forward Jason Sofman (so. West Milford, NJ/West Milford) and Benson gave Rowan a three point lead (7-4).  White’s three-pointer at 13:34 put the Profs up by six (12-6).  Rowan was ahead, 14-8 after a layup by Rosenberg (12:46). 

The Crusaders went on an 9-2 run to go up, 17-16 at 8:22.  White had a jumper at 7:52 to put the Profs back on top, 18-17.  Jackson’s tip-in at the four minute mark extended the advantage to six (25-19).  The Crusaders hit six straight foul shots to tie the game (25-25) at 2:20.  Spencer (3:52), guard Jake Eskin (so. Germantown, MD/Churchill) (3:05) and guard Tony Seldon (fr. Bloomfield, CT/Northwest Catholic) (2:20) had two free throws apiece.  McNamara made a jumper (1:57), but Spencer’s three-pointer (1:42) gave Susquehanna a one point lead (28-27).  Wilson followed with a three-pointer (:42).  Sofman converted a three point play with two seconds remaining to bring Rowan with one (31-30) at the break.

Rowan hosts Neumann University in a nonconference game on Tuesday, December 20 at 7 p.m.
