GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA – The Gwynedd-Mercy College men’s basketball team defeated Rowan University, 88-78 in a nonconference game on Tuesday night.
The Griffins improve to 8-3 overall. The Profs have a 4-6 record. Gwynedd-Mercy was led by guard Dan DelConte (sr. Blue Bell, PA/Wissahickon) with 28 points. Forward Frank Champion (jr. Northfield, NJ/Mainland Reg.) posted a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Forward Brandon Williams (sr. Philadelphia, PA/Philadelphia Electrical) added 11 points. Forward Brandon Sharp (sr. Hammonton, NJ/St. Joseph’s) totaled 10 points and seven boards. Guard Doug Berzins (jr. Royersford, PA/Spring-Ford) tallied six assists and six rebounds.
For Rowan, guard Kendall White (jr. Lumberton, NJ/Rancocas Valley Reg.) compiled a career-high 26 points. Guards Rich McNamara (so. Southampton, NJ/Seneca) and Phil Jackson (so. Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape) both scored 12 points. Guard Jason Rosenberg (so. Wayne, NJ/Wayne Valley) contributed with 11 points and five assists.
The Profs trailed, 18-14 following a three-pointer by Jackson at 11:49 in the first period. The Griffins scored nine straight points to go ahead, 27-14 at 9:04. Champion collected four points, Williams added three and DelConte sunk two foul shots. Rowan forward Jason Sofman (so. West Milford, NJ/West Milford) hit one of two free throws at 6:24 to make the score 31-19. Gwynedd-Mercy went on a 10-0 run to increase the lead to 22 (41-19) with 3:43 on the clock. DelConte had seven of the 10 points. The Griffins were up, 49-27 at the intermission. DelConte led all first half scorers with 17 points.
The Griffins extended their advantage to 27 points (54-27) on a three-pointer by DelConte at 18:45 in the second stanza. The score was 64-37 at 15:46. The Profs registered eight consecutive points to pull within 19 (64-45). McNamara’s jumper at 8:43 cut the deficit to 17 (74-57). DelConte had a layup with 5:33 remaining to make the score, 82-59.
Rowan trailed by 10 (82-72) following a 13-0 surge. White scored nine of the 13 points. DelConte hit two free throws (1:23) and Champion had one (:45) to push the lead to 13 (85-72). Jackson answered with a three-pointer at the 29 second mark. After Champion made two foul shots (:25), Jackson sunk three straight free throws (:14) to bring Rowan within nine (87-78). DelConte’s foul shot with nine seconds left ended the scoring. White collected 24 points in the second period.
Rowan hosts Susquehanna University in a nonconference game on Saturday, December 17 at 3 p.m.
