Berkeley Edges Penn State Brandywine, 88-87 After Two Overtimes

GLASSBORO, NJ – The Berkeley College men’s basketball team edged Penn State Brandywine, 88-87 after two overtimes in the consolation game of the Heritage’s Dairy Stores Classic on Saturday.  The tournament was held at Rowan University.

Widener and Rowan meet in the championship.  In the first round on Friday, Widener defeated Berkeley College, 95-82 while Rowan had an 89-64 victory against Penn State Brandywine.

The score was tied at 83 to start the second overtime. At 4:05, Penn State Brandywine had two foul shots by forward Learon Pray.  Guard Gary Williams tied the score with a layup at 3:51.  Guard Davonn Boyd followed with a jump shot (2:52) that made the score 88-85.  Forward Brandon Jacquette had the last basket for the Lions with 1:38 left.

Berkeley (2-7) was led by center Terah Mingo with game-highs of  26 points and 15 rebounds.  Guard Andrew Webber contributed with 20 points, four boards and five assists.  Boyd ended the game with 18 points and eight rebounds. 

For Penn State Brandywine (2-8), forward Mike McGlynn totaled 21 points and 10 boards.  Guard Rasheed Wilkins followed with 19 points and seven rebounds.  He also dished eight assists and had four steals.  Guard Zachary Devito and guard Sean Mulkeen added 12 and 11 points respectively.  They both grabbed seven rebounds.   

In the first overtime, Wilkins put Penn State Brandywine ahead 77-75 (2:45) with a layup.  Boyd’s basket tied the score at 2:24.  He had another layup (1:51) and Webber followed with a basket (1:36).  Berkeley led by four points (81-77).  The Lions answered with four straight free throws, two by Pray (1:35) and two from Wilkins (0:59).  Mingo’s jump shot put the Knights up by two (83-81) with 27 seconds on the clock.  Wilkins scored the tying basket at the four-second mark. 

Penn State Brandywine was ahead by six points (45-39) after a three by McGlynn at 17:43 in the second stanza.  Mingo scored two straight baskets and the Knights trailed by two (47-45) with 15:22 remaining.  Wilkins’ jump shot made the score 54-47 at 12:20.  Boyd had a layup (11:11) and guard Daniel Infante made two free throws (10:47) to pull within one (56-55).  Mingo connected on two fouls shots (10:18) to take the lead (57-56).  Pray’s two free throws tied the score at 59 (9:02).  Boyd followed with a layup (8:48) for a two-point advantage (61-59).

Mingo’s jumper at 7:03 put the Knights up by five points (67-62).  The Lions pulled within one (73-72) after McGlynn’s three-pointer with 3:28 left.  Guard Vince Mostardi followed with a three (1:14) to take the lead, 75-73.  Mingo sent the game into overtime with a jumper at the 35-second mark.
 
In the first half, Penn State Brandywine was ahead 9-4 at 16:02 after a three-pointer by Devito. Williams hit a three that made the score 9-7 with 15:23 remaining.  The Lions answered with a 9-0 run to lead by 11 points (18-7) at 12:03. McGlynn’s three-pointer at 10:40 put Penn State Brandywine ahead 23-11.  Berkeley scored nine straight points and trailed by three (23-20) at 8:39.  Webber scored six of the nine points.  The Knights were down by three points (27-24) at 6:23 after guard Devante Chang’s basket.  Webber cut the deficit to two points (30-28) with two free throws (4:03). Wilkins converted two foul shots (0:50) and Penn State Brandywine was ahead 38-32.  Berkeley had five points to end the period down by one (38-37).  Williams made a layup and a free throw with four seconds on the clock.
