ANNVILLE, PA – The Rowan University men’s basketball team had a 71-64 victory over Gallaudet University in the consolation game of the Rinso Marquette Tournament on Sunday. The tournament was hosted by Lebanon Valley College.
Rowan improves to 2-1 on the season, while Gallaudet has a 1-2 record. Lebanon Valley plays Wesley College in the championship game at 3 p.m. In the first round on Saturday, Rowan fell to Wesley, 90-53 and Lebanon Valley had a 79-62 win over Gallaudet.
The Profs were led by guard Kendall White (jr. Lumberton, NJ/Rancocas Valley Reg.) with 19 points and five steals. Forward Rich McNamara (so. Southampton, NJ/Seneca) followed with 13 points and a career-high 20 rebounds. Guard Jason Rosenberg (so. Wayne, NJ/Wayne Valley) tallied 11 points and nine assists. Center Dee Benson (so. Somerdale, NJ/Sterling) registered eight points, while forward Jason Sofman (so. West Milford, NJ/West Milford) and guard Phil Jackson (so. Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape) each had seven. Sofman was selected to the All-Tournament Team.
For the Bison, forward Danny Kelly (jr. Strongsville, OH/Strongsville) compiled 20 points and 14 rebounds. Kelly was chosen to the All-Tournament Team. Forward Layton Seeber (sr. Champaign, IL/Centennial) and guard Brandon McMillan (sr. Frederick, MD/Maryland School for the Deaf) collected 14 points apiece. Seeber also had seven assists and four blocks. Guard Tony Tatum (sr. Gardendale, AL/Huffman) contributed with seven points and seven rebounds.
Rowan was ahead, 23-16 at 11:53 in the first half following a layup by Rosenberg. His three-pointer at 7:36 extended the lead to nine points (28-19). Gallaudet cut the deficit to four (28-24) after a three-pointer by Seeber (5:55) and a layup by Kelly (5:07). Sofman had a layup at 4:13 and guard Matt Rosengrant (so. Toms River, NJ/Toms River E.) added a basket at 3:56 to give the Profs a 32-24 advantage. White’s three-pointer with 33 seconds left put Rowan ahead by nine (35-26). Kelly recorded a layup as time expired to bring the Bison within seven (35-28) at the intermission. White posted 13 points in the first period and McNamara grabbed 11 boards. Seeber had eight points for Gallaudet.
The Profs were up, 52-40 at 13:47 in the second half. Rowan scored the next seven points for a 59-40 lead at 10:20. Jackson hit a three-pointer, while White and Rosengrant had one basket apiece. White’s jumper at 4:23 made the score, 67-48. The Bison recorded 11 straight points to pull within eight (67-59) with 26 seconds remaining.
McMillan registered four points, Seeber made a three-pointer, Tatum had a basket and Kelly sunk two free throws. Rosenberg’s layup with 23 seconds on the clock extended the lead to 10 (69-59). Seeber nailed a three-pointer (:19) and Kelly added a layup (:16) to cut the deficit to five (69-64). McNamara’s two fouls shots with five seconds left sealed the victory.
Rowan hosts Alvernia University in its home opener on Tuesday, November 22 at 6 p.m.
